A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

RCP License Full Job Description Job Summary:
Variable:
Evenings/Nights Provides quality respiratory care utilizing knowledge, professional judgement and standard principles in cardiopulmonary to promote and maintain health for patients of all ages in accordance with physician orders.
Functions and Duties:
Assists patient to accomplish treatment plan and supports life by administering inhalants; operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems and aerosol generators. Evaluates effectiveness of respiratory therapy treatment plan by observing, documenting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommending adjustments and modifications to the plan. Documents patient care services by charting in electronic medical record and other department systems. Performs diagnostic procedures including arterial puncture, blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests, 6 minute walks, etc. Ensures safe operation of equipment, clean and safe working environment, and adheres to infection control policies. Collaborates with physicians, nursing and other members of the health care team. Teach patients how to use treatments. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education Graduate of an approved AMA program required. Experience 1 year of experience is preferred. Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations Current Registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care required. Current Illinois State license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist required. Current Basic Life Support required. Skills and Abilities Ability to prioritize duties for timely completion of routine, scheduled and stat procedures. Ability to work within the critical care team.
