General Summary/Basic Purpose of Job:
Respiratory Care student for basic responsibilities working under a licensed therapist. Administers respiratory care treatments and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of cardiopulmonary system, under supervision of a Physician and by prescription. Evaluates and performs both basic and advanced respiratory care procedures on a repetitive basis.

None Essential Functions and Duties:
Evaluates all therapies performed for medical necessity according to Departmental guidelines. Educates patients and their families, physicians, and other health care workers in proper respiratory care procedures that sustain and promote respiratory health. Installs and maintains oxygen delivery systems per the physician's written order. Starts equipment and observes gauges measuring pressure, rate of flow, and continuity to test equipment, and notifies Clinical Manager of malfunctions. Accurately documents all therapies performed, in the patient's medical record and in departmental records. Utilization of a computer is necessary to perform these duties. Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes equipment used in administration of respiratory therapy. Checks and maintains equipment for patient use. Performs medication nebulizer, postural drainage, and other basic treatment modalities per the physician's written order.
Evaluates patient response:
breath sounds, HR, PEFR, SpO2, secretions. Notifies RN or MD of any adverse reactions (including pain). Communicates both written and verbally, regarding therapies performed. Assists Resource Coordinator and other departmental personnel as requested. Participates in Departmental educational programs. Maintains confidentiality of patient information Demonstrates knowledge of pharmacology by written examination. Demonstrates proper procedures for all laboratory techniques. Uses proper procedure in clinical safety and blood borne pathogens. Demonstrates knowledge of the use of nebulizer including policy, procedure, and proper usage. Demonstrates ability to apply oxygen therapy. Demonstrates ability to set up, test, and maintain adult ventilators. Skills & Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION
High school diploma or completion of a GED program. Must be currently enrolled in good academic standing in the second year of a two-year American Medical Association (AMA) approved school for Respiratory Care. Continuous enrollment with good academic standing is required to maintain active employment status. Graduate of an accredited entry-level AMA approved school for Respiratory Care preferred.
MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE
None
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS
CPR (BLS) certification required. Must become a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within 3 months of eligibility. Must become licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) within three months (90days) of attainment of CRT certification.
