What they do

A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

  • $40 per hour This employee administers respiratory therapy care to long term care residents with abnormalities and deficiencies of the cardiopulmonary system according to physician prescription.
Job Responsibilities:
Review prescription and patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment Determine suitable treatment administration and modifications that may be needed, compatible with physician orders Set up and operate devices including mechanical ventilators, nebulizers, and/or compressors Operate equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment such as volume, oxygen concentration, and/or temperature Monitor patient response to therapy via vital sign and blood chemistry changes Observe equipment function and adjust equipment to obtain optimal results Consult with physician in event of adverse reaction Inspect and test respiratory therapy equipment to ensure it is functioning safely and efficiently Order repairs when needed Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees Perform staff education at customer facilities Perform tracheostomy tube changes
Requirements:
Licenses:
Active State Respiratory Care Practitioner license
Education and Experience:
Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program Previous related work experience
