A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

You'll work alongside physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals while providing critical respiratory care to patients across the lifespan. Responsibilities include:
Perform respiratory treatments and diagnostic procedures according to physician orders Assess, monitor, and evaluate patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions Administer oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, airway clearance therapies, and other respiratory treatments Assist with ventilator management and advanced respiratory support Provide respiratory care to neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients Monitor patient response to treatments and communicate changes to the healthcare team Accurately document assessments, treatments, and patient outcomes Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals Follow hospital safety, quality, and regulatory standards Deliver compassionate, patient-centered respiratory care
Qualifications Required:
Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care program Current Illinois Respiratory Therapist license or eligibility New graduates may be considered with a letter of authority while completing state licensing requirements Current ACLS certification
Preferred:
Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential
