A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Job Description
RWJBarnabas Health, New Jersey's largest integrated healthcare system, is seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist to join our Cancer Center team in New Brunswick, NJ. In this role, you will deliver high-quality respiratory care, perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to support oncology patients. Responsibilities Provide comprehensive respiratory assessments for oncology and complex medical patients in inpatient and outpatient settings Administer respiratory therapies including oxygen, aerosolized medications, bronchial hygiene techniques, and related treatments Manage non invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation in collaboration with physicians and care teams Perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, and bedside spirometry Monitor patients' clinical status and adjust respiratory therapies and ventilator settings per protocols and physician orders Respond to respiratory emergencies, rapid responses, and codes, assisting with airway management and stabilization Provide tracheostomy care, assist with intubation preparation, and support extubation readiness evaluations Educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, treatment plans, equipment use, and self management strategies Document all assessments, treatments, and patient education accurately in the electronic medical record Collaborate with multidisciplinary oncology and hospital teams to develop and coordinate individualized care plans Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory standards in all aspects of respiratory care Participate in quality improvement, evidence based practice initiatives, and continuing education activities Required Skills Respiratory assessment and care planning Mechanical ventilator management (invasive and non invasive) Oxygen therapy and aerosolized medication administration Bronchial hygiene and airway clearance techniques Arterial blood gas sampling and interpretation Pulse oximetry and bedside pulmonary function testing Tracheostomy care and airway management support Recognition and response to respiratory emergencies Oncology and palliative respiratory symptom management Electronic medical record (EMR) documentation Interdisciplinary communication and teamwork Infection prevention and patient safety practices Patient and family education on respiratory care Use of respiratory care equipment and monitoring devices Critical thinking and clinical decision making in acute care
