A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

All Certified Respiratory Therapist responsibilities. Assists physicians with Bronchoscopy Procedures under departmental policy including monitoring and assessment of the level of consciousness, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems; as well as delivery of IV conscious sedation agents to include drugs in the classifications of opioids, benzodiazepines and sedative-hypnotics and their reversal agents. Initiates ventilator protocols; implements and coordinates ventilator management. Performs advanced airway care to include tracheotomy changes, extubating, and intubation. Initiates and monitors high-frequency ventilators. In NICU Therapists will also perform: Surfactant delivery, and intubation and attend high-risk deliveries. Optional procedures: transport team, intubation, and backup charge therapist. Initiates and monitors Nitric Oxide delivery. Performs department-specific functions as detailed within the summary of the department-specific duties.Qualifications:
- Associate degree in respiratory therapy
- Reg Resp Therapist (NBRC)
- Respiratory Care Practitioner-NM
- BLS
- ACLS and/or PALS
- Six months to one year of experience in critical care is preferred.
