A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Description

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Respiratory Therapy, the Certified Respiratory Therapist is responsible for routine respiratory care as well as non-invasive ventilation, oxygen administration, pulmonary function studies and pulmonary rehabilitation education. The Certified Respiratory Therapist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by his/her department - young adult through geriatric. The Certified Respiratory Therapist must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span; possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status; interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs; and to provide the care needed as described in Respiratory Therapy Department's policies and procedures.

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent required. Must be a graduate of an AMA approved school for Certified Respiratory Therapists.
