POSITION SUMMARY
To use professional knowledge, evaluation and intervention to minimize or eliminate speech and language deficits which interfere with the individual student's ability to benefit from the district's education program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of theory, principles, and methods of speech pathology and their proper application in the educational environment. Considerable knowledge of appropriate evaluation tools. Considerable knowledge of the equipment and assistive technology available to use in therapy. Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends and developments in the field of speech pathology. General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration. Skills in directly providing a wide range of treatment activities. Ability to select and administer appropriate assessment and treatment methods. Ability to plan, coordinate and conduct on-the-job training for a variety of individuals.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Complete designated follow-up procedures for students referred for special education services. Evaluate and diagnose speech and language disorders in students. Develop, implement, monitor and review the Individual Education Plan (IEP) of each student on the caseload, at least annually. Work with parents in all aspects of their child's education program and facilitate improved communication skills. Collect and maintain accurate and descriptive records on all students on the SLP's caseload. Provide appropriate speech-language screenings and diagnostic services. Collaborate with general education and/or special education educators on an on-going basis. Refer students to other specialists as needed. Assure all procedural safeguards are afforded to students and their parents. Provide effective therapeutic service according to established program guidelines and through appropriate service delivery models. Administer, on an on-going basis, evaluations of student progress toward mastery of established goals and objectives specified in the IEP. Provide information concerning the nature, purpose and outcome of speech/language therapy services to students, parents and professionals. Consult with classroom educators, as requested and appropriate, concerning the educational needs of students. Participate in school staffings and screening processes, as appropriate. Participate in professional growth activities through participating in educational meetings, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas with district staff. Ensure that each student on the caseload has necessary evaluation records in his/her temporary file. Complete quarterly progress reports on each student on the caseload. Supply progress reports to school personnel and to parents as necessary and requested. Complete appropriate reports for local, state, federal and educational agencies. Adhere to school district policy, administrative procedure, local board policy and state and federal rules and regulations. Perform other related duties as assigned.
