Position Summary/Purpose:
The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) will serve as a core member of the interdisciplinary team, providing specialized clinical services to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),significant cognitive impairments, and multiple disabilities. This role requires a clinician with an advanced background in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and a commitment to a Total Communication philosophy. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that every student regardless of their verbal output has a robust, functional, and reliable means of communication to access the curriculum and engage with their community.
Role and Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
AAC Clinical Leadership :
Lead the assessment, selection, and implementation of high-tech and low-tech AAC systems. Utilize "feature matching" to align student capabilities with appropriate Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) and software (e.g., TouchChat, TD Snap, LAMP Words for Life).
Total Communication Implementation:
Design and execute therapeutic interventions using a multi-modal approach, integrating manual signs, tactile cues, Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS), and environmental visual supports.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
Provide expert consultation to Special Education Teachers, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists to integrate communication goals into all aspects of the student's day, including sensory and motor programming.
IEP Management:
Develop rigorous, data-driven Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals that prioritize functional communication, self-advocacy, and social-emotional growth.
Training & Capacity Building :
Conduct formal training sessions for paraprofessionals and caregivers to ensure consistent AAC modeling (Aided Language Stimulation) across all environments.
Neurodiversity-Affirming Care:
Implement evidence-based practices that respect the unique communication styles of autistic and neurodivergent learners, focusing on autonomy rather than compliance. Assist in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. Establish a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students. Work effectively with community organizations. Appropriately operate all equipment as required. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned. Support the value of an education for all students. Support the philosophy and vision of the cooperative and school district. Assist in the early recognition and prevention of educational problems. Monitor student progress and make informed, timely educational decisions in collaboration with school teams and administration. Conduct speech, language, and hearing screenings and diagnostic evaluations to determine the need for services. Participate as a team member in the comprehensive evaluation, review, and reevaluation process. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and others concerning the needs of students and special services that are available. Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum modifications and appropriate classroom strategies. Refer students and their families to appropriate community agencies and services. Cooperate with agencies serving students and their families. Provide therapy, follow up, and/or consultation based on student IEPs. Motivate students through effective communication and evaluative feedback. Demonstrate awareness of the needs of students and provide for individual differences. Set high expectations for student achievement and behavior. Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others. Establish and maintain a positive climate for learning through appropriate classroom management. Plan and implement transitional programs for all students. Assist students in developing feelings of self worth and in making social adjustments which permit them to cope with disabilities. Maintain appropriate, confidential records and provide timely reports. Order and maintain an adequate inventory of materials and supplies. Supervise and train staff members as assigned. Assist with public awareness activities which lead to a better understanding of the needs of exceptional children. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques. See that school district and cooperative policies are observed during all activities. Obtain advance approval for all special activities and expenditures. Adhere to all district and cooperative health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan. Perform other duties assigned and appropriate to the position.
Required Experience or Training:
Education:
Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an ASHA-accredited program.
Licensure:
Valid ISBE Licensure (or eligibility for immediate licensure) in Speech-Language Pathology.
Language:
As a multi-language district, we always prefer staff who are bilingual but it is not required for this position
Work Environmental Conditions:
This position operates within Enger School, a Public Therapeutic Day School (PTDS). Candidates must be comfortable working with students who may exhibit significant sensory, behavioral, or medical needs and must be able to adapt therapy sessions to meet the fluctuating needs of the student.
