Job Description

SUMMARY In accordance with established policies and procedures, the Speech-Language Pathologist performs a variety of tasks necessary to support the communication needs of early childhood students in Eaton County. The Speech-Language Pathologist evaluates students for possible speech and language disorders. They provide direct student instruction and/or therapy in group or individual sessions, both in the classroom and in small groups. The incumbent works with staff, parents and other agencies in helping each individual student reach his or her maximum potential. This incumbent may be assigned to a local district.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participates in MTSS/Tiered Intervention Processes in assigned districts or programs, providing coaching on Tiered Interventions and recommending referral for special education evaluation when a disability is suspected.
  • Coordinates special education evaluations with family and other evaluators, completing evaluations within the required timeline. Completes comprehensive speech and language evaluations as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Participates in Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) meetings, IEP meetings, and other relevant team meetings concerning students receiving speech services.
  • Follows eligibility and caseload requirements as stated in the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education.
  • Plans individual goals and objectives for the speech and language needs of each student assigned.
  • Assures that speech and language services are provided in accordance with state and federal special education laws.
  • Provides direct instruction to students and/or consultative services to staff and parents.
  • Collects data, documents data and narrative summaries, and maintains records of each student's progress.
  • Completes student progress logs and Medicaid monthly summaries to document progress on IEP goals and objectives.
  • Participates in developing departmental and program goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates student schedules, service plans, and space and equipment needs with administrators and teachers.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of research, theories, and practices associated with the Speech and Language Pathology profession.
  • Maintains current knowledge of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Required
  • Michigan Speech-Language Pathology License Optional
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association or working toward certification with appropriate supervision.
o Speech-Language Pathologists who do not hold the CCC cannot supervise student clinicians or Clinical Fellows.
EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
Required
  • Possession of a master's degree in Speech and Language Pathology.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Extensive knowledge of the field and scope of practice of Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic testing and treatment techniques for communication disorders.
  • Knowledge of special education eligibility decision making and adherence to the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE.)
  • Thorough understanding of speech and language development.
  • Extensive knowledge of autism and complex communication needs.
  • Knowledge of positive behavior supports, communication supports, and other accommodations and modifications.
  • Skilled in the use of technology to implement work responsibilities.
  • Ability to plan and execute treatment programs.
  • Ability to discuss communication disorders with various professionals and families.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with adults and young children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to navigate busy or stressful situations.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and within teams to accomplish identified goals and strategies.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, children, and parents.
