PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To help reduce or eliminate speech impediments that interferes with the individual student's ability to derive full benefit from the District's educational program.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
Master's Degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university Valid Texas license as a speech-language pathologist granted by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and/or the State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SBESLPA) Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA CCC), preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to use the accepted tests and measurements to assess speech impairments Knowledge of speech evaluation and therapy procedures Strong consultation skills with an emphasis on effective communication (verbal and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills Bilingual Skills preferred
Experience:
Experience in public school speech therapy preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
ASSESSMENT (Not applicable for Licensed Assistants) Conducts evaluations to assess students with speech or language impairments to determine eligibility. (Licensed Assistants can administer routine tests). Develops strategies or procedures and diagnostic statements by interpreting observations or data. Assists in conducting evaluations for assistive technology. Participates in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist in interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students with speech impairments or conditions. THERAPY Plans and provides appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech and language goals contained in the Individual Education Plans (IEP). Evaluates student progress and determines readiness for termination of therapy services. Maintains appropriate documentation concerning lesson plans and logs.
CONSULTATION
Counsels and involves parents in the remedial process. Collaborates with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities to improve speech and language skills of students. Participates in the student's multidisciplinary committee in order to plan for his/her appropriate educational program. Provides professional development in assigned schools to help school personnel identify and understand speech impairments in students. Communicates effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the accomplishment of therapy goals and needs of the student.
STUDENT MANAGEMENT
Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students. Establishes sound behavior management that is conducive to the instruction provided in the therapy sessions.
PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
May supervise licensed speech-language pathology assistant(s). Assists in the selection of equipment and instructional materials.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT
Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records and other required documents. Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education and board policy. Complies with all district and campus routines and regulations. Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills related to job assignments. Maintains accumulation of CEU's in order to keep license current. Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others. Performs other duties as assigned.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
