Job Description
JOB DETAILS
This temp-to-direct inpatient Speech-Language Pathologist position is based in San Marcos, Texas, a vibrant Hill Country community ideally situated between Austin and San Antonio. San Marcos is known for its spring-fed San Marcos River, clear blue water ideal for tubing, kayaking, and paddleboarding nearly year-round. The city offers a blend of small-town friendliness and big-city access, with nearby outlet shopping, live music, local breweries, and a growing food scene. Outdoor enthusiasts appreciate its parks, extensive riverfront trails, and easy day trips to other Hill Country destinations. The presence of a large university campus brings energy, cultural events, and a variety of dining and entertainment options, while the cost of living remains generally more approachable than larger metro areas. This role is fully inpatient, caring for adults across the continuum of acute and subacute medical needs. The SLP will be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that may include physicians, nursing, PT, OT, case managers, dietitians, and other allied health professionals. You will have the opportunity to use and refine your medical SLP skills daily, particularly in swallowing and communication disorders. A typical day includes performing comprehensive speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallow evaluations; completing and interpreting MBSS in conjunction with radiology staff; and developing individualized treatment plans that are medically appropriate and functionally focused. You can expect to see approximately 8 patients per day, balancing new evaluations, MBSS studies, and follow-up treatment sessions. Caseload commonly includes patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, neurodegenerative disease, cardiopulmonary conditions, post-surgical needs, and general deconditioning. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting evidence-based assessments, documenting thoroughly and efficiently in the electronic medical record, participating in team rounds or care conferences, and providing timely education to patients, caregivers, and staff. You will play a key role in recommending safe diet levels and compensatory strategies, making instrumental assessment recommendations, and contributing to discharge planning to support safe transitions of care. The position is structured as a full-time, day-shift schedule, working five 8-hour shifts per week for a total of 40 hours. This daytime schedule supports a predictable routine while allowing you to enjoy evenings exploring San Marcos's riverfront, local eateries, and cultural offerings, or taking short drives to Austin, San Antonio, and other Hill Country communities. The environment is designed for clinicians who value meaningful patient interactions, close-knit teamwork, and the chance to build a strong clinical résumé in inpatient and MBSS-focused practice.
