Job Summary The Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) will assist speech language pathologists to treat a variety of speech language disorders in children. They will help assess children in language, voice, fluency, articulation, or hearing and implement treatment plans as directed by speech-language pathologists. The Speech Language Pathology Assistant will also collect data, prepare progress reports, and perform other support duties. Attendance and physical presence are required and is an essential function of this position. Essential Functions Under the direction of a Speech Language Pathologist's direction the SLPA assists in diagnosing and treating speech and language disorders and scientifically studies human communication. Assists in diagnosing and evaluating speech and language skills as related to educational, medical, social, and psychological factors. Assists in planning, directing, and conducting treatment programs to restore communicative efficiency of children with communication problems of organic and nonorganic etiology. Non-Essential Functions Other duties as assigned Required Knowledge and Skills Possess strong oral and written communication skills. Possess strong computer and educational technological skills. Works independently with little direct supervision. Works as part of a team. Accepts responsibility and is self-motivated. Possess skills in working with all areas and severity levels of communication disorders as well as well all age levels. Knowledge of special education compliance. Required Education and Qualifications An SLPA must complete an approved course of academic study, field work under the supervision of as ASHA-certified and/or licensed SLP, and on-the-job training specific to SLPA responsibilities and workplace behaviors. The academic course of study must include or be equivalent to an associate degree in an SLPA program or a bachelor's degree in a speech-language pathology or communication disorders program and successful completion of a minimum of one hundred (100) hours of supervised field work experience or its clinical experience equivalent and demonstration of competency in the skills required of a SLPA. Required Prior Experience Experience in providing services to at-risk and high-risk students and their families Experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Assigned Decision Making Under the direction of a Speech Language Pathologist, the technician will support decision making in student therapy, data collection, and communication with parents. Interactions with Others Interacts positively and communicates effectively with students, parents, staff, teachers, administration, and other district persnnel. Supervisory Responsibility Oversees the safety of students. Numbers of students may vary based on their needs. Budget Responsibility NA Working Environment Work takes place in a typical school environment. Supervision of students requires both indoors and outdoor responsibilities (e.g., recess duty, gymnasium activities, etc.) in all types of weather and air quality. Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Physical Requirements - Not limited to the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to speak and/or hear. Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, and crouch. Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Must be able to stand/sit for long periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally up to 25 lbs.
