Job Description

Veterinary Healthcare Associates (VHA) is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Specialty Surgery Veterinary Assistant to join our Specialty Surgery team. In this role, you will support advanced surgical procedures through patient preparation, surgical assistance, postoperative care, instrument processing, and maintenance of a safe and efficient surgical environment. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced veterinary assistant who thrives in a fast-paced specialty setting, enjoys supporting complex surgical cases, and is passionate about delivering exceptional patient care. Responsibilities Prepare surgical suites, equipment, and supplies for procedures Assist with patient preparation, including restraint, monitoring, catheter setup, and surgical prep Support technicians and surgeons during procedures while maintaining sterile technique Monitor and document patient observations during recovery Assist with postoperative patient care and comfort measures Clean, sterilize, organize, and maintain surgical instruments and equipment Perform routine checks of anesthesia and surgical equipment Maintain clean, stocked, and organized surgical and recovery areas Complete daily, weekly, and monthly department checklists Assist with accurate medical record documentation and communication with the veterinary team Utilize Fear Free and low-stress handling techniques to support patient comfort and safety Collaborate with surgeons, technicians, and hospital teams to support efficient patient care Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Veterinary Assistant in specialty, surgical, emergency, or high-volume veterinary practice Demonstrated experience supporting surgical procedures, patient preparation, and postoperative patient care Proven experience maintaining sterile technique, preparing surgical suites, and supporting surgical workflow Experience cleaning, processing, organizing, and maintaining surgical instruments and equipment Experience monitoring patients during recovery and promptly communicating changes in patient status Strong patient handling and restraint skills, including Fear Free and low-stress handling techniques Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment while maintaining attention to detail Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills Commitment to exceptional patient care and continuous professional growth
Preferred:
Experience in specialty surgery or specialty referral practice Fear Free Certification and/or Low-Stress Handling Certification Interest in pursuing advanced training and career growth within specialty veterinary medicine Why Join VHA?
