Description:
Position Summary The Surgical Medical Assistant plays a key role in supporting the Mohs surgeon and surgical team in providing high-quality patient care before, during, and after dermatologic surgical procedures. This position is responsible for preparing patients and treatment rooms, assisting with Mohs surgery and related procedures, maintaining sterile technique, and ensuring a smooth and efficient patient experience throughout the surgical day. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepare patients for Mohs surgery and other dermatologic surgical procedures. Obtain and document patient medical history, medications, allergies, and vital signs as appropriate. Escort patients to and from treatment rooms and provide education regarding procedures and post-operative care. Assist the Mohs surgeon during surgical procedures, including sterile setup, instrument handling, and procedural support. Prepare and maintain sterile fields and ensure compliance with infection control standards. Clean, sterilize, and organize surgical instruments and equipment. Perform suture removals, dressing changes, wound care, and other clinical duties within scope of practice and training. Assist with specimen handling, labeling, and coordination with laboratory personnel. Document procedures, patient interactions, and physician instructions accurately within the electronic medical record. Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering and stocking surgical supplies. Ensure exam rooms and surgical suites are clean, organized, and fully equipped. Respond professionally to patient questions and concerns and communicate effectively with providers and team members. Assist with patient scheduling, referrals, and other administrative duties as needed. Travel between clinic locations as needed to support surgical operations.
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent. Medical Assistant certification or relevant dermatology/medical office experience. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain upon hire. Strong organizational, communication, and patient service skills. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment. Preferred Previous dermatology experience. Previous Mohs surgery or surgical assisting experience. Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR). Knowledge of sterile technique and surgical procedures. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and assist patients as necessary. Manual dexterity sufficient to handle surgical instruments and medical equipment.
