Job Description
Mercy is seeking a Surgical Technologist First Assist to support surgeons and nurses in high-acuity operating rooms. You will prepare OR suites, ensure sterile technique, position and drape patients, and directly assist during procedures with retraction, suction, hemostasis, and suturing within scope. The role includes instrument and equipment setup, sponge and instrument counts, and accurate documentation. You'll collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesia, and nursing teams, precept newer staff, and uphold Mercy's standards of safety, compassion, and patient-centered care while supporting continuous quality improvement. Responsibilities Prepare operating rooms, instruments, and supplies for surgical procedures Maintain strict sterile technique and infection control throughout procedures Provide first-assist support including retraction, suction, hemostasis, and suturing within scope Position and drape patients safely in collaboration with the surgical team Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts and document per policy Operate and troubleshoot basic surgical equipment and instruments Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and nursing to optimize patient outcomes Precept and mentor new surgical technologists and staff as assigned Participate in quality improvement, safety initiatives, and compliance with Mercy standards Required Skills Surgical first assist techniques Operating room procedures Sterile technique and aseptic practice Surgical instrumentation and equipment Patient positioning and draping Intraoperative suturing and hemostasis Surgical counts and documentation Infection prevention and control Intraoperative patient monitoring support Electronic medical record (EMR) usage
