Job Description

New England Institute of Technology is seeking a part-time (up to 19 hours per week) Surgical Technology Lab Assistant for the Surgical Technology program. The duties and responsibilities of The NEIT Surgical Technology Laboratory Assistant are many and varied. The ST lab assistant is considered a staff position. Primary among them is to prepare the labs, tear-down and clean up following lab activities, assisting the instructor observing student techniques in the lab, ensuring safe student practices, biohazardous waste disposal, cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prepare for, participate in, tear down and clean up after laboratory classes according to established Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines for both day and evening classes.
  • Assist Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) with projects as needed.
  • Assist ST faculty during classes observing student technique to promote safety with sharps and biohazardous material, and general student safety with equipment and supplies as used during the class. Work collaboratively with faculty to determine assessments for instruments and skills.
  • Assist students to make up missed laboratory work by appointment, proctor missed quizzes and exams, and cover classes during unanticipated instructor absence. Schedule and proctor comprehensive exams each term.
  • Reinforce student's skills acquisition during open laboratory time.
  • Maintain endoscopic equipment, OR table and accessories, instruments trays, and other supplies and equipment in working order, assessing need for repair, refurbishment, or replacement and arranging for repair when necessary.
  • Disinfect all laboratory equipment and instruments when needed.
  • Inventory laboratory consumables, quarterly, complete purchase orders and research vendors. Assist with the maintenance of records for supply and equipment costs.
  • Review student clinical logbook to assess for number of surgical procedures and correct documentation of category of procedure.
  • Maintain and update retention and graduate lists, Outcome Tracking Tool, graduate and employer surveys.
  • Update the ST Core Curriculum mapping document each term to reflect changes in the
BIO/AHS/ST
syllabi.
  • Update ST laboratory manual and other laboratory documents as needed.
  • Adjust work schedule to service both day and evening students. This is a non-faculty salaried position of 35 hours per week.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work supportively and harmoniously with and maintain rapport with students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies.
  • Maintain the level of decorum expected in the academic environment.
  • Participate in department/college meetings, including to but not limited to Pinning Ceremony, ST student club events etc.
  • Participate in program recruiting activities, including but not limited to : Tech Camp, Open House, Tech Nite, Health Career fairs, Welcome and Acceptance days as requested by ST Department Chair.
  • Participate in NEIT's commencementceremony.
  • Participate with Technical Advisory Committees as needed.
  • Monitor and adhere to program and college accreditation requirements.
  • Be conversant with all college policies, regulations, and procedures (e.g. the Employee Handbook, the Orientation Handbook for New Faculty, the Intranet).
  • Comply with all college, state, and federal rules, regulations, and policies including but not limited to health and safety policies, the college sexual harassment policy, administrative rules, civil rights laws, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the provost and ST department chair.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The expectations and responsibilities of this position require that there be a high level of experience in the field as well as current certification as a surgical technologist. The ST Laboratory Assistant must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to be able to explain and demonstrate ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation OR using some other combination of skills and abilities.
  • Education and experience appropriate to perform the stated essential job functions.
  • Good working knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, and writing skills needed to write letters and create and complete various laboratory documents.
  • Ability to assist the public, NEIT employees, and students cooperatively and courteously.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal instructions, adhere to prescribed routines and practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent Computer Skills.
  • Competent in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA). have a minimum total of two years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as a lab assistant in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years. An associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in a related field is required, Bachelor's degree preferred.
