JOB SUMMARY
The RCIS fellow with work as a scrub tech as a first assistant to the physicians, assisting in the intra-operative phase including draping, prepping, and exposure of the surgical field. This position is skilled in assisting in invasive lab procedures on patients from all age groups and surgical modalities including Cardiac Catheterizations, Electrophysiology (EP) and Hybrid within scope of practice.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Other duties may be assigned. Obtains and sets-up appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedure. Creates and maintains a sterile environment while opening sterile supplies. Utilizes sterile process to assist physician during procedures, which includes all the following: maintain sterile field, anticipate needs, and understand use and proper preparation of invasive devices. Participates in pre-verification checklist and time outs. Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to procedure and before incision is closed. Assist with surgical procedures including such activities as gowning and gloving surgeon, assisting with draping the sterile field, passing/exchanging equipment to surgeon during procedure. Keeps accurate records throughout the procedure. Ensures correct labeling and handling of surgical specimens and medications. Applies and secures sterile dressings after incision closure. May need to apply manual pressure to access site. Assist in patient care within scope of practice. Reports observed changes in patient status to physician and RN. Helps transport patient post procedure to the recovery room. At end of case prepares instruments for cleaning and reprocessing. Assists in cleaning procedural room, room turnover, and preparing for next patient. Reports supply and equipment needs to inventory specialist, distributes items to appropriate area.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate from an accredited EMT/Paramedic program, RRT, Surgical technology Program or Military Training Program in Surgical Technology or Bachelors in Health Science. RCIS certification required within 2 years of start date. Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
