Definition of Position:

Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.

Responsibilities Essential Job Functions:

Preoperative Duties are as follows: Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).\nGathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.\nPerforms the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.\nSets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.\nPerforms initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.\nAssists the team members with gowning and gloving.\nAssists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.\nParticipates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.\nSecures tubing, cords and other sterile accessories.\nMaintains sterile field and reports any contamination.

Intraoperative Duties are as follows:

Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.\nAnticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.\nLabels, measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.\nHolds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.\nSponges or suctions on the operative site.\nApplies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders.\nCuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.\nCoordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.\nMaintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.\nPerforms additional counts as necessary.\nPrepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.\nPrepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.\nCleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.\nAssists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room.\nAssists in prepping the OR for the next patient.\nParticipates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.

Postoperative Duties are as follows:

When SPD is unavailable, decontamination of instruments/equipment.\nAssist with post procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and prepare room(s) for subsequent patients.

Other Duties are as follows:

Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.\nParticipate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities.\nAssist with stocking chores.\nThe employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.\nParticipates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).\nPerforms other related duties as assigned.
