Job Summary Operating Room:
Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse performs a variety of technical and routine tasks to facilitate the care of the patient undergoing surgery.
Labor & Delivery:
The Surgical Technician assists in the care of patients in the Labor and Delivery area and the Obstetrical Operating Room, which includes the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and un-sterile supplies and equipment. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse is responsible for performing individually assigned patient care activities based upon established patient care policies and procedures and routine tasks essential for upkeep of obstetrical area.

Develops an individualized plan of care for each surgical patient in conjunction with the RN which reflects ability to set priorities, ability to determine appropriate resources for each procedure. 2. Demonstrates competency to deliver direct/indirect patient care in all specialties. 3. Reporting information such as sponge count and specimens retrieved to assure continuity of care. 4. Maintains the integrity of the aseptic environment.

C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Observes psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and physical condition of patient and/or changes in condition, reports observations. 2. Performs routine phlebotomy obtaining specimens for laboratory testing. 3. Performs blood glucose testing and quality controls. 4. Assists the Registered Nurse in providing support of the patient and family throughout the labor, delivery and recovery process. 5. Maintains the L&D O.R. (instruments and supplies in ready condition). Sets-up and breaks down O.R. as needed. 6. Scrubs for cesarean sections. Provides instruments, sutures and other sterile supplies during surgical procedures.

- Keeps account of instruments and needles being used
- Notifies surgeon and circulating nurse if an instrument or needle is not intact when removed
- Assumes a major role in assuring that infection control policies and procedures relating to the surgical procedure are followed during the course of surgery
- Prepares the closing counts with circulating nurse according to the established guidelines.
7. Assesses supplies in the LDR's, OR's and supply room. Restocks and/or facilitates ordering of supplies as necessary. 8. Assesses fetal monitor equipment in each LDR. Maintains appropriate type and number of cables in each monitor. 9. Performs complete or partial patient hygiene. 10. Obtains, measures and documents non-invasive vital signs, intake and output as directed. 11. Completes and documents unit's equipment checks as assigned (e.g. Code Cart, IV Pumps, etc.) and reports problems/malfunctions as appropriate to
NM/ANM/L&D
Charge Nurse. 12. Assists in the transporting of patients. 13. Assists with basic clerical functions such as telephone answering, entering patients and orders into the computer and other clerical tasks as needed. 14. Compiles all Obstetrical procedures & itemizes coding for charge entry. 15. Performs as a receptionist, if needed, meeting and greeting patients and families as necessary. 16. Performs other duties as directed by the RN. These duties may cross over to the Mother/Baby Unit as needed.

Qualifications Operating Room:
1-2 years experience preferred
Labor & Delivery:
