Activities are based on accepted standards of operating room and are performed within the scope of education, training, and experience. This requires planning, implementation, and evaluation through clinical knowledge of basic concepts and skills. The Surgical Technician will work to provide excellent care to patients of all ages, from adolescents to geriatrics. Essential Duties and Responsibilities These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned. Review operating room schedules and surgeon preference cards to prepare for procedures. Gather, organize, and open necessary instruments and supplies; anticipate surgical needs. Perform pre-operative setup, surgical hand scrubs, and safety checks on equipment. Maintain a sterile field, assist with passing instruments, and support the surgical team during procedures. Follow all protocols for instrument and material counts, specimen handling, sharps disposal, and infection control. Restock surgical suites, assist with patient positioning, and aid in room turnover between cases. Clean, inspect, and properly process surgical instruments; ensure accurate sterilization and documentation. Operate and maintain sterilization and decontamination equipment per hospital standards. Ensure sterile items are properly packaged, stored, and handled; monitor for breaks in aseptic technique and report as necessary. Identify and report damaged or missing instruments; sort, prepare, and store instrument trays appropriately. Maintain organization and cleanliness in surgical, recovery, and delivery areas. Attend required training sessions, meetings, and demonstrate flexibility to meet patient care needs.

Education and Experience Minimum Required Education:

High school diploma and successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program. On-the-job training combined with a valid license will be considered as an equivalent substitute for the completion of a Surgical Technology Program.

Experience:

One year of experience is preferred. Specialty areas may require a certain level of experience. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must hold an active, unexpired BLS certification. Must be licensed by the Board of Medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia to practice as a Surgical Technologist or Certified Surgical Technologist. Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting preferred.
