Job Description

Position Summary:
The Telemetry Technician monitors and interprets cardiac rhythms for patients across the hospital, supporting early recognition of changes in clinical status. This role provides continuous observation of telemetry monitors, accurately identifies rhythm abnormalities, and promptly communicates significant changes to nursing and medical staff. Working as a collaborative member of the care team, the technician contributes to patient safety through precise documentation, timely escalation of concerns, and consistent surveillance of assigned patients. Through attention to detail, clear communication, and dependable monitoring, the Telemetry Technician helps maintain a safe care environment and supports effective coordination of cardiac monitoring services.
Key Responsibilities:
Continuously monitor cardiac rhythms, recognize normal and abnormal patterns, and promptly notify appropriate nursing or medical staff of changes requiring intervention. Document rhythm strips, alarms, and significant events accurately in accordance with departmental standards and hospital policies. Maintain awareness of patient assignments, monitor function, and equipment status, ensuring that leads, alarms, and telemetry devices are operating correctly. Collaborate with nursing units to support safe patient monitoring, respond to inquiries, and assist in troubleshooting telemetry connections or equipment issues. Maintain patient confidentiality, follow established communication protocols, and support safe, organized workflow by coordinating information with the care team. Participate in ongoing training and skill development to maintain competency in cardiac rhythm interpretation and monitoring system use.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
Must have a current CNA, EMTB, Paramedic, or other healthcare professional license. BLS certification is required within the orientation period.
Educational Requirements:
High School education or equivalent preferred.
Experience Requirements:
A medical background/terminology is preferred. Stronger preference is given to applicants with rhythm experience (e.g., EMTB, paramedic, etc.)
Special Skills or Training Requirements:
Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively and work in a team atmosphere. Computer and keyboarding skills.
Physical Requirements:
The Telemetry Technician primarily performs work in a seated position with extended periods of visual concentration while observing monitors. The role requires frequent use of computers, keyboards, and communication devices, along with intermittent walking to clinical areas as needed. Adequate visual acuity, hearing, and manual dexterity are essential for interpreting cardiac data, responding to alarms, and interacting with clinical staff.
Environmental Requirements:
Work occurs in a controlled clinical environment with exposure to typical hospital noise levels, multiple monitor alarms, and frequent interruptions. The role involves working closely with nursing and medical teams and may require adapting to changing patient assignments and high-acuity situations. Strict adherence to privacy, safety, and infection-prevention protocols is necessary when entering patient care areas or handling telemetry equipment.
