Job Description:
The department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences is seeking a Director of the Equine Research Program (ERP). This individual will be the veterinarian of record for all large animals on teaching and research protocols. The director will function as the attending veterinarian for large animals in both research and teaching activities, providing veterinary oversight of the animals' health and well-being free of conflict of interest with the study outcome as required by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The veterinarian will treat the animals on research or teaching protocols as needed and will determine when an animal must be removed from a protocol. The ERP Director is the direct supervisor of the ERP manager, to whom the
ERP TEAMS
staff and the part-time ERP OPS staff report.
Duties include:
1. Establish and maintain ERP policies and procedures as required by Animal Care Services for all approved non-ACS housing facilities. Provide these polices and other documentation as requested by IACUC for their regulatory oversight. 2. Serve as the principal investigator for Large Animal Hospital/ College of Veterinary Medicine teaching animals (equine, bovine, caprine), blood donors, and Animal Holding (equine only) IACUC protocols. Schedule, oversee and document animal use to ensure remaining within guidelines for humane use as stated in the procedure. 3. Provide oversight of all preventative care and emergency care of resident large animals. Complete quarterly physical examinations and administer preventative health medications including vaccines, anthelmintics, etc. 4. Acquisition of large animals for teaching and research needs throughout the college, including anatomy, clinical skills and other department/ services that have needs. 5. Oversee quarantine of new animals including sample collection and testing (e.g., guttural pouch cultures by endoscopy.) 6. Manage large animal donation requests. 7. Oversee ERP staff with direct supervision of ERP manager who in turn has oversight of Teams ERP staff and temporary OPS staff. 8. Plan tasks needed including animal care, facility maintenance and equipment maintenance. 9. Maintain a balanced ERP budget ensuring that the income generated covers the expenses. 10. Ensure accurate records are kept in compliance with IACUC reporting regulations. 11. Oversee unit's preparation and response to biannual IACUC inspections, annual USDA surprise inspections and triennial AAALAC inspections. 12. Oversee the acquisition of limbs, heads, reproductive tracts and other postmortem samples required for teaching labs throughout the curriculum. 13. Assist faculty in animal use compliance as an interface between IACUC and LA faculty.
