Job Description

Plans, coordinates, supervises and carries out the activities of the assigned laboratory section. Work is carried out in an independent, professional manner with minimal supervision. Area of Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates the ability to be self-directed and capable of independent follow-up.
  • Ensures that all instrument maintenance is performed per regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains adequate inventory control for the department evaluating supply expenses.
  • Maintains and reviews quality control for the section as outlined by regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible for the timely entry of proficiency testing results to the appropriate reporting agency. Ensures that personnel in the section complete PT assignments.
  • Communicates effectively with other employees in the section. Gives constructive criticism when indicated. Communicates with Chief Tech or Director when problems arise.
  • Complies with standards set forth by all regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrates organizational skills utilizing time, equipment and supplies well.
  • Establishes priorities effectively.
  • Exhibits flexibility and adaptability to unique needs of the department.
  • Identifies and corrects technical problems quickly and notifies appropriate personnel, physician, department, etc.
  • Knowledgeable of and follows OSHA's blood borne pathogen regulations thus using universal precautions, wearing appropriate PPE's at all times and adhering to no eating, drinking, applying make-up or removing contacts while in the lab.
  • Listens to customer complaints/suggestions attentively and reports appropriately.
  • Maintains technical competence through active participation in available continuing education activities.
  • Oversees the work performance of MLT personnel.
  • Participates in performance improvement opportunities.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new personnel and student interns.
  • Performs laboratory testing in all designated sections of the laboratory in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Performs phlebotomy when required in a proficient and timely manner.
  • Prepares for regulatory agency inspections and receives minimal deficiencies for the section.
  • Prepares written/electronic procedures for laboratory tests and instrumentation for the section.
  • Promotes teamwork and empowers individuals to meet their potential.
  • Provides telephone consultation when needed.
  • Recognizes and responds to all critical values and delta checks.
  • Responsible for emergency and on-call duty if applicable.
Compliance StatementEmployee performs within the prescribed limits of Tanner Health System's Ethics and Compliance program. Is responsible to detect, observe, and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, the Compliance Officer, or the Hotline.

Must lead the work of all technologists and technicians assigned to the section. Assistance will be rendered with more complex procedures. Troubleshooting and problem-solving assistance will be given to those assigned to the section. Recommendations will be given to the Chief Technologist or Lab Director regarding the job performance and attitude of staff assigned to the section.
