Job Description
Phlebotomist obtain specimens for laboratory testing. Assistance is given in various areas of the lab when not performing venipuncture. Education

Effect Of ErrorProbable errors not easily detected and may adversely affect external as well as internal relationships and may result in major expenditures for equipment, materials, or procedures detrimental to the patient?s welfare or the organization?s interest. Work is subject to general review only and requires considerable accuracy and responsibility. Continually works with reports, records, plans, and programs of a major functional area of the organization where integrity is required to safeguard the organization?s position. Duties may involve the preparation of data on which the administration bases important decisions and are highly confidential.
Supervisory ResponsibilityRegularly uses assistance of aide or helper or leads the work of one to four co-employees; checks performance of work assigned as to accuracy and time, doing same work, it?s more difficult aspects, or other related workMental DemandsSemi-routine duties of some variety and difficulty performed under general supervision and following general operating procedures and practices. Work involves some planning to select correct methods and correct for error. Physical EffortMedium physical effort - Lifts, carries, or handles lightweight (1 to 25 lbs.) materials or equipment for most of the day. Occasional physical effort with medium weight objects (25-60 lbs.). Very occasional physical effort with heavy objects (over 60 lbs.).Works in reaching or strained positions for about half of day.
Working ConditionsConsiderable - (About 75% of the day) Involved in exposure to dirt, odors, noise, or some work is performed with exposure to temperature/weather extremes/occupational risk and probability of coming into contact with blood borne pathogens, other potentially infectious diseases, or biomedical/bio-hazardous materials.
Working Conditions Aspects For Immunizations
Occasionally (at least once a month)
- Must be able to communicate effectively in a professional manner
- Must be able to provide leadership in a team environment.
- Must demonstrate computer skills within 90 days.
- One-year phlebotomy experience preferred. Area of Responsibilities
- Demonstrates effective teamwork and communication skills with other departments which includes physicians, nurses, other clinical areas, etc. Communicates with co-workers in an effective manner showing respect to others.
- Demonstrates organizational skills by utilizing time efficiently and prioritizing effectively.
- Demonstrates proficiency in specimen collection and specimen processing using two patient identifiers.
- Knowledgeable of and follows OSHA's blood borne pathogen regulations and Infection Prevention guidelines, i.e.. appropriate hand washing techniques, patient isolation techniques, etc.
- Properly collects blood cultures by yielding low contamination rates.
- Assists in training new phlebotomist(s) and students during orientation period to reflect Tanner Health System policies and procedures.
- Complies with standards set forth by Accreditation Agencies.
- Demonstrates behaviors necessary for age-specific care and knowledge of decision making processes for all ages of populations served.
- Demonstrates caring behavior to patients, family, visitors, physicians and other hospital personnel.
- Demonstrates competency in collection of chain-of-custody and NIDA drug screening.
- Demonstrates discretion and tact to perform duties in a professional manner and demonstrates patient confidentially.
- Demonstrates proficiency in setting up bacteriology cultures when assigned.
- Demonstrates the ability to work safely and responsibly without supervision.
- Participates in continuing education as mandated per Accreditation Agencies and hospital policy.
- Routinely performs computer functions that are related to the phlebotomist's daily tasks for timely and accurate specimen collections.
