Title:
High School Social Studies Teacher
Minimum Qualifications:
1.Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. 2.New Hampshire certification or eligibility to hold NH Certification. 3.Passing scores on any required exams such as the Praxis or state specific assessments.
Job Goals:
1.Utilize technology to foster interactive learning. 2.Continuously seek out professional growth opportunities, such as workshops or conferences focused on teaching methods or content. 3.Develop strategies to increase student interest and participation in class, possibly through gamified learning or project-based assignments. 4.Regularly update the curriculum to include diverse voices and perspectives, ensuring that content is relevant and inclusive. 5.Strengthen the culture of collaboration by sharing resources and strategies with fellow teachers, through a professional learning community. 6.Improve the use of formative and summative assessments to better understand student needs and adjust teaching approaches accordingly. 7.Aim to provide more personalized guidance to students, especially those who might be struggling with the subject matter. 8.Provide essential support for the Priority Areas outlined in the SAU #34 Strategic Plan. Performance Responsibilities:
Planning and Preparation
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of Social Studies pedagogy.
  • Tailor instruction to meet the diverse learning styles and the needs of high school students.
  • Set instructional goals that promote critical thinking and effective communication skills.
  • Design coherent units and lessons that integrate acquiring, analysis, and communication skills. 2. Classroom Environment
  • Create an inclusive environment that nurtures students' appreciation for social studies topics.
  • Establish a classroom culture that motivates students to engage in and value historical analysis and the social sciences.
  • Manage classroom dynamics effectively to facilitate discussion and collaborative activities in the social studies curriculum.
  • Optimize the classroom layout to support a learning environment conducive to group collaboration, debates and discussions. 3. Instruction
  • Communicate historical and social concepts clearly and connect them to real-world contexts.
  • Employ a variety of questioning techniques to enhance civil and civic-focused discussions and encourage diverse viewpoints.
  • Actively engage students in the learning process through creative assignments and project-based learning.
  • Utilize assessments to monitor progress and adapt instruction to help students develop their historical understanding and social sciences.
  • Adapt lessons and activities to respond to student feedback and varying levels of student skills and understanding. 4. Professional Responsibilities
  • Regularly reflect on and adjust teaching practices based on classroom successes and challenges.
  • Keep precise records of student participation, assignment completion, and progress in social studies skills.
  • Communicate effectively with families about their student's achievements and areas for improvement in Social Studies.
  • Collaborate with other Social Studies department members and school staff to enhance curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities in the fields of history, social sciences, and education technology.
  • Maintain high standards of ethical behavior and professionalism in all interactions within the school community.

Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will constantly bend neck and back, use hands for repetitive grasping and pushing/pulling. The employee is frequently required to stand/walk, squat, kneel, and use hands for fine manipulation. The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as books. Potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases as carried by students; exposed to student noise levels. Required to work outdoors in inclement weather; required to stand for prolonged periods. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school.

Annually per the Hillsboro-Deering Professional Evaluation Plan
Contract:
Master Contract between the Hillsboro-Deering Federation of Teachers AFT Local 2348, AFT-NH, AFL-CIO and the Hillsboro-Deering School Board.
