Job Description
Job Summary:
The HV Electrical Field Observer is responsible for monitoring and inspecting high-voltage electrical construction and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with design specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. This role acts as the owner's or engineer's representative in the field, providing quality assurance and reporting on project progress.Key Responsibilities:
Observe and document installation, testing, and commissioning of HV electrical systems (e.g., substations, transmission lines, switchgear). Ensure work complies with project drawings, specifications, and applicable codes (NEC, NESC, IEEE, OSHA, etc.). Monitor contractor performance, workmanship, and adherence to safety practices. Conduct site inspections and identify deficiencies, non-conformance issues, or safety hazards. Review and verify testing procedures (e.g., insulation resistance, hi-pot, relay testing). Maintain detailed daily reports, logs, and photographic documentation of field activities. Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and inspectors. Witness critical activities such as energization, switching, and commissioning. Support QA/QC processes and ensure proper documentation is completed. Assist in resolving field issues and providing technical feedback.Required Qualifications:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience). 3-10+ years of experience in high-voltage electrical construction, inspection, or field engineering. Strong knowledge of HV systems (typically 69kV-500kV or higher). Familiarity with substation equipment (transformers, breakers, relays, bus systems). Understanding of electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications. Knowledge of safety standards and regulations (OSHA, NFPA 70E).Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with renewable energy projects (solar, wind, BESS). NETA certification or similar testing/inspection credentials. Previous experience as an owner's rep or field inspector.OSHA 10/30
certification. Professional Engineer (PE) license (optional but valuable).Skills & Competencies:
Strong attention to detail and observational skills. Excellent communication and reporting abilities. Ability to work independently in field environments. Problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Proficiency with field reporting tools, MS Office, and documentation systems.Working Conditions:
Primarily field-based (construction sites, substations, remote locations). Exposure to high-voltage environments and outdoor conditions. May require travel and extended hours, including weekends. Must follow strict safety protocols and use PPE.Physical Requirements:
