ABOUT US
Deaf Shark Coffee is an independent specialty coffee shop in Union, NJ serving single-origin El Salvador beans with a focus on craft and community. We're building something intentional here — not a chain, not a franchise.THE ROLE
We're looking for a Senior Barista who takes coffee seriously. You'll work the bar at a high level, contribute creative input on seasonal and signature drinks, and help set the standard for coffee quality in the shop. This isn't an execution-only role — your ideas matter here.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare and serve specialty espresso and manual brew beverages consistently
- Contribute to menu development — seasonal drinks and signature offerings
- Dial in espresso and adjust variables to maintain quality throughout service
- Maintain equipment cleanliness and flag any maintenance needs
- Uphold food safety regulations and proper food handling procedures at all times
- Operate the POS system with accuracy, including cash handling
- Foster a welcoming environment by engaging customers with friendly, knowledgeable service
- Support and mentor junior staff on technique and standards
- Perform other duties as required or assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move quickly for up to 8 hours per shift
- Regularly lift and move up to 40 lbs (coffee bags, milk crates, paper goods)
- Must be available to work all operational hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of specialty or craft coffee experience required (independent shop experience strongly preferred)
- Strong latte art skills — required, not a bonus
- Familiarity with single-origin beans, espresso dialing, and brewing variables
- Basic math skills for cash handling and inventory management
- Strong time management during high-volume periods without sacrificing quality
- Excellent communication and guest service skills
- Someone who genuinely cares about the cup they hand to a customer
