Position Information Position Title Lead Barista & Student Program Supervisor Department Economic Development Division Coffee Shop Job Type Part-Time, less than 20 hours per week FLSA Non-Exempt Job Summary The Lead Barista & Student Program Supervisor supports the daily operations of a City-owned coffee shop located in Hurst while advancing a collaborative workforce development partnership between the City of Hurst and HEB ISD. The program provides hands-on job training and real-world employment experience for students participating in culinary and special education programs in HEB ISD. This position performs advanced barista duties and provides shift-level leadership, operational support, and mentoring for student employees. The Lead Barista & Student Program Supervisor helps maintain high standards of customer service, safety, and product quality while fostering a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. This position is responsible for staff training, supervising shifts, coordinating inventory, and supporting opening and closing procedures. This role serves as a positive role model by reinforcing professional workplace behaviors, including communication, teamwork, accountability, and customer engagement, while supporting student development and program success. Essential Job Functions Prepares and serves coffee, espresso beverages, and light food items in accordance with established recipes and quality standards. Delivers professional, courteous customer service and maintains a welcoming environment for guests. Assists with opening and closing procedures, including cash handling, cleaning, and equipment operation. Maintains cleanliness and organization of work areas, equipment, and dining spaces in compliance with health and safety regulations. Monitors inventory levels, restocks supplies, and communicates operational needs to management. Operates café and kitchen equipment safely and in accordance with established procedures. Provides shift supervision and serves as a point of contact for routine operational or customer service issues. Assists with training and onboarding of student employees in barista skills, food safety, and workplace expectations. Mentors student participants and models professional workplace behaviors, including punctuality, teamwork, and communication. Supports a safe, structured, and inclusive environment for students with diverse learning needs. Collaborates with City staff, educators, and program partners to support student development and program success. Maintains sanitation and food safety standards consistent with local health department regulations. Follows production guidelines, cleaning schedules, and established operational procedures. Communicates effectively with supervisors and coworkers to ensure consistent service delivery and operational continuity. Adheres to Hurst s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way, fostering positive employee relations and professionalism. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and program participants. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of basic coffee preparation methods, espresso equipment, and café operations. Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and safe food handling practices. Ability to provide high-quality customer service in a public-facing environment. Ability to communicate clearly, patiently, and respectfully with students, coworkers, and customers. Ability to mentor and support individuals with diverse learning styles and abilities. Skill in cash handling and point-of-sale (POS) systems. Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and remain calm in a fast-paced setting. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to established procedures. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and assist with supervisory responsibilities. Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment. Ability to demonstrate and apply the City of Hurst Code of Ideals in all interpersonal interactions. Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Previous barista, food service, or café experience is required. Previous lead or supervisory experience is preferred. Experience working with youth, students, or workforce development programs is preferred. Must obtain and maintain all required food handling and food safety certifications in accordance with local and state regulations. Must have reliable communication and the ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. Must have reliable transportation and flexibility to work assigned shifts. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen. Must pass a criminal background check and credit check. Must have a valid Texas driver s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy. Physical Demands and Working Conditions The physical demands and working conditions described below are are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires the ability to work in a café environment involving light to moderate physical activity. While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods; use hands and arms to handle, grasp, reach, and operate equipment; bend, stoop, crouch, and perform repetitive motions associated with food and beverage preparation. The employee must be able to regularly lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds when restocking inventory, operating equipment, transporting supplies, moving small tables, and stacking chairs. Occasional lifting or moving of items up to approximately 40 pounds may be required with assistance or appropriate equipment. Duties may include pushing carts, setting up or breaking down small café or meeting area furniture, and handling boxes of supplies or beverage products. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment includes exposure to kitchen equipment, hot surfaces, and moderate noise levels typical of a food service operation. Employees may be exposed to minor environmental factors such as heat, cleaning chemicals, or wet floors and must follow established safety procedures at all times.
