The Beth-El Center is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides support services and advocacy to those experiencing homelessness and hunger within the Greater Milford community. Through our 34-bed homeless shelter, food service programs, diversion services and outreach and engagement efforts, we offer individuals, families and veteran's long-term solutions to help them reclaim their lives.
JOB SUMMARY
The No Freeze Crisis Counselor provides daily supervision, reporting and support services to guests in a low barrier facility that promotes a Housing First philosophy; primary responsibility is to facilitate an emotional and physical environment conducive to enhancing positive guest morale and stabilization by ensuring the security and safety of the facility; maintaining appropriate records in addition to ongoing written and verbal communication with the case manager and supervisor in relationship to daily guest activities; support and encourage guests in achieving goals outlined in their housing plans. The Overflow No Freeze Crisis Counselor is responsible for conducting evening screenings at the Beth-El Center, coordinating transportation to the overflow site, accompanying and supporting guests throughout their stay, and maintaining a safe and respectful environment alongside Overflow Site volunteers. This role promotes a Housing First philosophy and ensures the emotional and physical safety of guests through supportive supervision, strong communication, and consistent application of program expectations. Duties mirror core expectations outlined in the No Freeze Crisis Counselor structure, particularly regarding safety, documentation, de-escalation, and trauma-informed, harm-reduction practices.
PROGRAM MODEL
The Beth-El Center's Overflow Program provides a safe, warm overnight space for unsheltered neighbors during periods of increased demand and/or cold weather when the primary No Freeze site reaches capacity. The program is grounded in Housing First, low-barrier, harm-reduction, and trauma-informed practices, with a focus on meeting immediate basic needs while maintaining a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment.

One staff The Overflow Program operates as an extension of Beth-El Center's emergency response system, providing additional overnight capacity and ensuring that individuals are not turned away from a safe place to stay when the primary overnight space reaches capacity.

Utilize Harm Reduction model and Trauma Informed approach during delivery of services Strong communication skills, conflict resolution skills, and crisis intervention skills are required Able to organize daily activities of self and others and to work as a team player Able to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment Organizational and problem-solving skills essential to coordinating transportation and site transition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Arrive at Beth-El Center at 6:00 PM to begin nightly overflow procedures. Conduct screenings to determine guest eligibility for the overflow site based on safety, space, and program guidelines. Email overflow names from No Freeze laptop nightly to Hannah Smith ( ), Kaylyn Crawford ( ) prior to arranging transportation. Communicate expectations clearly and respectfully to guests accepted for overflow. Arrange safe and timely transportation for approved guests each night. Ensure all guests are accounted for prior to departure; maintain accurate headcounts. Prepare logistics for morning return transportation and communicate clear instructions to guests. Travel with guests to the Overflow site and ensure a smooth, respectful transition. Introduce or check in with volunteers on duty and establish communication for the night. Reinforce expectations around behavior, safety, and shared space use. Conduct routine monitoring to ensure safety, compliance with expectations, and guest well-being - comparable to hourly rounds required in No Freeze settings. Apply de-escalation and harm-reduction strategies in response to behavioral or emotional concerns. Immediately escalate serious incidents, safety issues, or medical emergencies to the on-call leadership. Maintain a supportive, calm, and respectful presence with guests and volunteers. Complete nightly logs, screening records, attendance, and incident reports before leaving the site. Document issues in a timely, accurate manner consistent with Beth-El standards in line with No Freeze reporting expectations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• High school diploma or equivalent
