Child Nutrition Food Assistant (Substitute) Newark Unified School District - 3.9 Newark, CA Job Details Temporary | Part-time From $16.90 an hour 4 hours ago Qualifications Recycling Pre-cooking preparation Customer service Employee relationship building High school diploma or GED Meal assistance Full Job Description Child Nutrition Food Assistant - Substitute Job Summary Under the direction of the Child Nutrition Supervisor, Food Service Manager, or designee, the Child Nutrition Food Assistant - Substitute assists with the preparation, serving, and distribution of meals and snacks to students and staff. The position performs a variety of routine food service duties in accordance with established menus, recipes, sanitation requirements, food safety regulations, and district procedures. The substitute may be assigned to different school sites and schedules based on district needs and must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced food service environment while maintaining a positive and courteous manner with students and staff. Essential Job Responsibilities Assist with the preparation of food items according to standardized recipes, menus, and established food preparation procedures. Assist with setting up serving lines, food stations, dining areas, and kitchen work areas. Serve meals and appropriate portions to students and staff in a courteous and efficient manner. Assist with cashiering and meal-count procedures as assigned, including following district procedures for identifying and recording student meals. Follow established procedures for special meal requests, dietary restrictions, and food allergies. Maintain appropriate food temperatures and follow food safety and sanitation procedures at all times. Operate and safely use kitchen equipment, utensils, serving equipment, and cleaning equipment appropriate to the assignment. Wash, peel, cut, portion, package, and prepare food items as directed. Replenish food and supplies on serving lines as needed. Clean and sanitize food preparation areas, serving areas, tables, counters, utensils, equipment, and other assigned areas. Wash dishes, trays, pots, pans, and other food service equipment. Properly store food, supplies, and equipment according to established procedures. Assist with receiving, checking, rotating, and putting away food and supplies as assigned. Monitor inventory and report shortages, damaged products, or other concerns to the appropriate supervisor. Assist with opening and closing kitchen and food service areas. Properly dispose of food waste, trash, and recyclables. Follow all applicable federal, state, county, and district requirements related to food safety, sanitation, health, and workplace safety. Maintain confidentiality and protect student information encountered during the performance of assigned duties. Interact appropriately and professionally with students, staff, parents/guardians, and visitors. Provide friendly and respectful customer service while maintaining appropriate boundaries with students. Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and sanitary work environment. Report equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, spills, accidents, injuries, or other unusual conditions to the supervisor promptly. Attend required training related to food safety, sanitation, workplace safety, and district procedures. Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Basic knowledge of food preparation, serving, sanitation, and safe food-handling practices. Ability to follow standardized recipes, written and verbal instructions, menus, and established procedures. Ability to learn and safely operate food service equipment. Ability to work cooperatively with others in a fast-paced environment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff. Ability to communicate clearly and courteously. Ability to maintain a clean and sanitary work environment. Ability to follow health, safety, and food service regulations. Ability to perform physical tasks associated with food service work. Ability to adapt to different school sites, assignments, schedules, and daily operational needs. Dependability, punctuality, flexibility, and a commitment to providing quality service to students. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent is desirable. Prior food service, cafeteria, restaurant, kitchen, or customer service experience is desirable. Ability to obtain and maintain any food safety certification or training required by applicable regulations or district policy. Ability to successfully complete required district employment and safety requirements.
