(BA-DIMU-IUBLA) Department Information IU Dining and Hospitality embraces and expands Indiana University's core values of education, innovation, and tradition which embody the true spirit of Hoosier hospitality. IU Hospitality infuses Indiana University's beautiful campus with vibrant life, creating a home away from home for visitors and the IU community alike. From our space in the Indiana Memorial Union, hospitality staff serve thousands of guests each year through professional dining and retail operations, catered events, conferences, and celebrations, keeping our spaces clean and functional, our food tasty, and our customers happy. Through meticulous planning and coordination, constant innovation, and a keen attention to detail, IU Catering staff use fresh, seasonal ingredients to deliver spectacular client-driven culinary experiences from piping hot coffee and in-house baked pastries for a meeting of 20 to a sumptuous 5 course meal and elegant custom cake for a wedding of 200 on campus and throughout Bloomington. Job Summary Department-Specific Responsibilities Interacts with the host of the event to ensure the event is exceeding their expectations. Oversees event setup, servers during the event, and breakdown of events. Assists with inventory management for alcohol. Attends pre-event meetings, and executes events according to the Banquet Event Order (BEO). Acts as a liaison between the host, kitchen, and servers. General Responsibilities Assists with setting up and tearing down all venues, while communicating event expectations and ensuring customer service standards are demonstrated on the job. Works to store and deliver packages and equipment. Answers staff and customer questions, troubleshoots basic issues, and provides guidance on urgent matters. Covers bar event shifts, bartender breaks, and register operations as needed. Acts as back up for supervisor in his/her absence scheduling and training hourly employees on work activities. Trains employees in work and safety procedures and departmental policies. May provide guidance to lower-level catering positions. Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required 2 years of experience in food service
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required Food Safety (ServSafe) certification within 180 days from date of hire Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire Proof of Server Permit Application upon date of hire SKILLS Required Friendly and service-oriented Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner Knowledge of health and safety regulations Knowledge of professional cooking principles Ability to respond to common food inquiries or complaints from customers and take appropriate action to resolve issues Ability to work comfortably in a group environment, treat employees and customers with kindness and respect Ability to be a flexible team player in a dynamic environment requiring a customer focused approach and utilizing excellent interpersonal skills communication, facilitation and coaching skills Ability to work in safe and efficient manner Working Conditions / Demands This position requires tasks typically associated with back-of-the-house food service work. It involves periods of both sedentary work and times of frequent movement about the workspace. This role involves moving up to 15 to 25 pounds. This role requires using commercial kitchen equipment and tools, moving supplies and effective communication skills are necessary. This role involves handling meat and plant-based food products as well as a variety of ingredients that may include some or all of the top 9 allergens in the preparation of menu items and during the course of cleaning and ware-washing tasks. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. Work Location Bloomington, Indiana Advertised Salary $15.75 per hour Work Hours Shift times vary according to business needs. Management reserves the right to adjust work hours to accommodate special meals and events.
