The Rescue Mission of Trenton is seeking a dedicated and experienced Sous Chef to play a pivotal role in our kitchen operations and our transformative culinary training program. At the Rescue Mission, we believe in restoring hope and transforming lives. As our Sous Chef, you'll work hand-in-hand with our Chef and Kitchen Manager, ensuring our residents and guests receive nourishing, high-quality meals. More profoundly, you'll be instrumental in shaping futures by directly training and mentoring clients in culinary arts, helping them gain valuable skills and secure meaningful employment. What You'll Do:
Lead Culinary Excellence:
Assist the Chef and Kitchen Manager in overseeing all aspects of kitchen operations, including menu development, meal preparation, cooking, and serving for a diverse population, maintaining the highest standards of quality, presentation, and food safety.
Empower Through Education:
Work directly with clients in our culinary training program, providing hands-on instruction, guidance, and mentorship in all areas of kitchen operations and culinary techniques.
Support & Collaborate:
Partner closely with the Chef and Kitchen Manager to ensure seamless kitchen flow, efficient resource management, and a cohesive team environment.
Innovate & Create:
Contribute to menu planning, recipe development, and the continuous improvement of our food service and culinary training programs.
Maintain High Standards:
Ensure strict adherence to all food safety regulations (ServSafe certification is a must!) and sanitation protocols, setting an example for staff, volunteers, and clients.
Inspire & Mentor:
Foster a positive, supportive, and educational atmosphere for all kitchen staff, volunteers, and culinary program participants. We're Looking for
Someone Who Is:
An Accomplished Culinarion:
Proven experience as a Sous Chef or higher in a professional kitchen, with a strong background in high-volume production and diverse menu planning.
A Natural Teacher:
Prior experience in training, teaching, or mentoring in a culinary context is highly desirable. You genuinely enjoy sharing your knowledge and seeing others develop.
A Food Safety Expert:
Possesses a current ServSafe Manager certification and an in-depth understanding of all health and safety regulations.
A Collaborative Leader:
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team and inspire growth in others.
Highly Organized & Adaptable:
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
Compassionate & Mission-Driven:
Possesses a genuine desire to serve others and aligns with the mission and values of the Rescue Mission of Trenton.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3+ years of progressive culinary experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or instructional role. Culinary degree or equivalent professional training required. Experience working with culinary participants or structured training programs. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Deep knowledge of classical and modern culinary techniques. ServSafe Food Handler Certification required.
