Job Description
Job Description Mount Edgecumbe High School, a state-operated boarding school with a long and proud tradition of serving students, is seeking a skilled and dedicated Cook to join our Food Services team. The Cook will be responsible for preparing nutritious and appealing meals for our diverse student population and staff, adhering to established recipes, dietary guidelines, and sanitation standards. This role is crucial in supporting the well-being and overall experience of our students. These positions are for the 2026-2027 school year and will begin between July and August of 2026. Responsibilities Prepare a wide variety of food items, including main courses, side dishes, soups, salads, and baked goods, according to standardized recipes and production schedules. Follow menus and production sheets to ensure timely and efficient meal preparation. Operate and maintain kitchen equipment safely and efficiently, including ovens, stoves, grills, steamers, mixers, slicers, and other food preparation tools. Ensure proper food handling and storage procedures are always followed to maintain food safety and prevent contamination, adhering to HACCP guidelines. Monitor food temperatures and cooking times to ensure food is cooked thoroughly and to the correct internal temperatures. Practice proper portion control and presentation of food items. Assist with inventory management, including monitoring food supplies and informing Management or assigned supervisor of the items needed. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including workstations, equipment, and storage areas, adhering to all sanitation and safety regulations. Collaborate effectively with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth and efficient food service operations. Follow all school policies and procedures. Assist with catering for special events or school functions as needed. Adapt recipes or prepare culturally relevant dishes when appropriate and as directed. Other duties the employee is qualified to do may be assignedas needed. Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent. Culinary associate's degree or a degree in a related field of study preferred. A valid Driver's License and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance policy is strongly preferred but not required. One (1) year cooking experience in a food service, cafeteria or restaurant setting. Food Handler's Card or ServSafe Certification contingent upon 30 days of hire. Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read and write English. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
