A Cook prepares food in a restaurant or institutional kitchen. May be responsible for a specific station or type of food preparation in a larger kitchen, or specialize as a short-order or fast-food cook. May prepare meals in private homes, or cater parties.

Food Service Director / Head Cook Overview Berrien Springs Public Schools is seeking a dependable, customer-focused, and motivated individual to join our Food Service team as a Cook/Cashier. The successful candidate will assist in the daily preparation and service of nutritious meals for students and staff while maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient kitchen environment. This position requires strong customer service skills, attention to detail, the ability to multitask in a fast-paced setting, and proficiency with basic math and cash-handling procedures. Responsibilities Assist with the preparation, cooking, and serving of breakfast and lunch meals in accordance with district, state, and federal nutrition guidelines. Prepare food items according to established recipes and portion control standards. Operate a point-of-sale (POS) system and accurately process student and staff meal purchases. Handle cash, make change, balance daily receipts, and maintain accurate financial records. Maintain student meal account records and assist with daily record keeping and reporting requirements. Set up serving lines and food stations prior to meal service. Serve meals in a courteous and efficient manner while providing excellent customer service to students, staff, and visitors. Monitor food temperatures and ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation standards. Assist with receiving, storing, rotating, and inventorying food and supplies. Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, work areas, serving lines, tables, and food preparation areas. Wash dishes, utensils, trays, and kitchen equipment as assigned. Assist with special events, catering functions, and other food service activities as needed. Follow all district policies, health department regulations, and safety procedures. Work collaboratively with food service staff and take direction from the Head Cook and Food Service Director. Perform other duties as assigned to support efficient food service operations. Candidate Requirements High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous food service, cashier, or customer service experience preferred. Strong math skills and ability to accurately handle money and reconcile daily receipts. Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Excellent attendance, reliability, and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student meal account information. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday. Ability to obtain and maintain any required food safety certifications. Must successfully pass a background check.
