Job Description
Cook real food. From scratch. With ingredients worth cooking. Simply Fresh Market is a specialty grocery and prepared foods store in Brighton. We're not a chain, we're not a commissary, and we don't open bags of pre-made anything. Our kitchen cooks original recipes from organic and local ingredients — the same quality we'd put on our own table. Our purpose is enriching community through real food experiences. That work happens in the kitchen first. Somebody in Brighton is going to eat what you made tonight, and for a lot of our customers that meal is the best part of their day. We're hiring an experienced Production Cook to run day-to-day production for our Gourmet Meals program — the chef-prepared entrées and sides our customers take home every day. You'll work directly under our Executive Chef alongside a small, tight kitchen team. This is a cook's job, not a gourmet-only job. You'll cross into catering, carryout, and soup and salad production as the day demands. If you like variety, clean technique, and finishing the day knowing exactly what you produced, this will fit. What you'll do Prep, cook, and package high-quality prepared meals from scratch following our recipes and specs Execute daily production lists — hit par levels, hit quality, hit the clock Portion, package, label, and date finished product for the retail case Butcher, break down, and prep whole produce and proteins with clean knife work Taste and check every batch before it goes out; nothing leaves the kitchen you wouldn't feed your own family Own a dish start-to-finish — you'll know what you made, and you'll put your name on it Rotate stock and manage FIFO to keep waste low and freshness high Speak up early about ingredient needs, shortages, or a recipe that isn't working Keep the kitchen clean as you go — stations, equipment, walk-ins, floors — and pitch in on daily and deep cleaning with the rest of the team Follow all food safety, temperature, and sanitation standards Support catering, carryout, and other kitchen departments during busy periods What we're looking for Required 2+ years of professional cooking experience (restaurant, catering, commissary, prepared foods, or institutional) Real scratch-cooking ability — you can read a recipe and execute it accurately and consistently Solid knife skills and comfort with standard commercial kitchen equipment A genuine sense of urgency; you move with purpose and don't need to be pushed Willingness to clean, and to clean without being asked Weekend availability Ability to stand for full shifts, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in hot and cold environments Reliable transportation and dependable attendance — a small kitchen feels every absence Nice to have ServSafe certification (or willingness to get certified — we'll support it) Experience with batch production, packaging, or retail prepared foods Familiarity with organic and local sourcing, or scratch baking Catering or high-volume event experience How we hire: our core values These are the five values we hire, review, reward, and coach to — every day. Read them before you apply. If they sound like you, we want to meet you. Cultivating THE Experience — You listen. You're reliable. You take a dish from start to finish and stand behind it, because somewhere out there it's about to be the best part of someone's day. Rooted in Integrity — You're consistent and intentional. You tell the truth about a batch that didn't come out right instead of sending it to the case, and you own your mistakes without being asked twice. Feeding the Community — We source locally and we hire locally. You'll cook with food grown by people we know, for neighbors who walk through our door and tell us how it went. Growing Toward Excellence — Persistence, hard work, and creative problem solving. Things go sideways in a kitchen. We want a cook who solves it, not one who waits to be told. Tending to Wellness — We believe real food heals. You'll cook with nutrition in mind, and you'll be supportive of the people beside you on the line — the way you treat your team shows up in the food. Why work here Real ingredients. Organic, local, whole. You'll actually cook, not assemble. Original recipes. Our menu is ours. Good ideas from the staff get used. A real schedule. Grocery hours, not restaurant hours — no closing at 1am. A small team. You'll know everyone's name and your work will be visible. Employee discount on groceries and prepared foods. Room to grow. We're a growing single-location business, and we promote from within. How to apply Apply through Indeed with a short note about where you've cooked and what you're proudest of making. We're hiring immediately and will be scheduling working interviews as applications come in.
