GENERAL FUNCTION
Under the direct supervision of the Food Service Manager, the Cook shall be responsible for the Bethany House kitchen, preparation, serving, and cleanup of meals for the various programs, and work well as a team with other staff and volunteers.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
One year of cooking experience Valid Drivers License
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrate good oral communication and interpersonal skills. Sensitivity and ability to work with homeless population and persons of diverse backgrounds. Ability to institute positive reinforcements and to work as a team member in a kitchen and dining environment. Ability to plan and organize to perform work effectively and ensure successful completion. Availability to work evenings and weekends upon request .
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
COOKING, MEALS, AND
SUPPLIES
o Determine serving sizes and cook accordingly, plan menus, order supplies, oversee kitchen operations to ensure uniform quality and presentation of meals. o Prepare a large quantity of a limited number of entrees, sides, desserts, and beverages for various meal programs, meetings, and special events. o Ensure proper procedures are followed with regard to food preparation, handling, storage, service, and cleaning/sanitizing. o Maintain proper documentation related to dates of products, storage temperatures, and supply ordering/invoices. o Checks all incoming food supplies for quality and stores supplies properly. o Maintains inventory of food and kitchen supplies, reports stockpiling and surplus inventories, engages in first-in, first out system for usage of supplies. o Perform other assigned duties in a timely and efficient manner as requested or through demands of various programs.
CLEANING & SAFETY
o Maintains high standards of cleanliness and order in the kitchen, supply storage, and dining areas. o Is responsible for kitchen sanitation, housekeeping, and safety. o Responsible for garbage and timely pickups.
INTERACTION WITH TEAM MEMBERS
o Maintain positive communication with kitchen team, vendors, and other personnel. o Supervises, instructs, and positively utilizes lower-level employees and volunteers in areas related to work assignments. o Is responsible for on-the-job training of lower-level personnel assigned to kitchen areas. o Substitutes for Head Cook in his/her absence. o Understands and engages in responsibilities of others in the absence of complete kitchen team.
