POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Senior Aquatics Director, you'll help plan, run, and evaluate aquatics programming for our YMCA. You'll have the opportunity to build leadership and management skills and learn how to run a high-functioning department. You will help lead an aquatics operation with a team of 40+ lifeguards, swim instructors, and coaches. You will have the opportunity to work side by side with a Senior Aquatics Director who is invested in developing you, and take on real responsibility for scheduling, program design, staff training, and budget. If your goal is to become a Senior Manager or Aquatics Director, this role will help you get there. You will also have the opportunity to work with our competitive swim team, which won the 2026 Pennsylvania YMCA State Championship, and was named a 2025 Top 10 Small Age Group Teams in the U.S. by the American Swimming Coaches Association.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED :

High school diploma or equivalent. Current Lifeguard and CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain both before your start date. YMCA program-specific certifications, or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to pass background checks and complete child abuse prevention training. Availability for a variable schedule. Aquatics run early mornings, nights, and weekends.

PREFERRED

: One to two years of experience in aquatics, recreation, camp, education, or a related field. Previous supervisory or lead experience of any kind. College degree in any field. Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Swim Lessons Instructor Trainer certification. Competitive swimming or coaching background. Familiarity with aquatics industry standards and trends. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Keep the aquatics area safe, clean, and ready. Assess the aquatics area for risks and act on what you find. Schedule and supervise lifeguards and swim instructors, with the direction and guidance of the Senior Aquatics Director. Know YMCA and aquatics policies and procedures. Set clear expectations and hold the team accountable to them. Coach, develop, and strengthen our aquatics staff. Help new staff get certified and trained to meet our standards for excellence. Run in-service trainings and safety drills, and keep every staff member's certifications current and documented. Ensure that facilities, supplies, and equipment are maintained and in good working order. You will get exposure to indoor facility pool mechanics and learn the ropes of water chemistry balancing and safety standards. Fulfill Lifeguard and Swim Instruction roles as needed, leading by example. Provide excellent member service and engage with members to understand their goals and enhance their experience. Help design, launch, and evaluate current and new aquatics programming. Use aquatics management software for swim lessons, swim team, and other programming. Maintain records for program evaluation and reporting. Assist with ordering equipment and supplies and managing the budget. Assist with implementing special events related to the Aquatics Department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to pass standard lifeguard water rescue tasks. Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. (e.g.; moving lane lines, chemical buckets, other equipment). Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods. Comfortable working in a warm, humid, indoor pool environment.
