Aug 17, 2026 Job Description Lyndon Institute is seeking to hire a part-time, 20 hours per week, Outdoor Adventure Director. This position will work a10-month schedule in accordance with our academic school calendar. This position will report directly to the Head of School and work extensively with the Dean of Students.
SUMMARY:
The Outdoor Adventure Director will oversee creating, planning, and promoting opportunities for Lyndon Institute (LI) students to enjoy outdoor recreation regularly. Programming can be during or after the school day, large and/or small groups, in coordination with classes and curricula or not. S/he will lead a volunteer committee of educators and staff at LI to achieve these goals and to define this program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts recreation programming including outdoor education, overnight camping trips, leisure education, experiential education activities, and day trips.
  • Plans for and leads such activities as nordic ski, snowshoe, canoe, lead team building activities, ropes course facilitation, natural science and wildlife education, mountain biking, hiking, explore outdoors, fishing, stalking, practicing survival skills, and crafts
  • Leads the volunteer Outdoor Adventure Committee for ideas, implementation support, and community integration of efforts
  • May also collaborate with Outdoor Recreation and Land and Resource Management programs to include relevant activities
  • Responsible for assuring the safety and proper maintenance of any equipment as it is used for activities
  • Assists faculty with planning and executing like programming
  • Oversees all aspects of planning: brainstorming, logistics, communication, safety training, and execution
  • Partner with local area resources for mutual benefit (Outing Club, the Mountain, etc.)
  • Manage outdoors equipment inventory
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate field preferred;
  • Minimum of one year experience working with children or adolescents in a recreational/activity setting; background, knowledge, and skills in a variety of outdoor recreation activities; commensurate industry experience is preferred
  • Appropriate certification in areas of speciality and eligibility for additional training in other areas as deemed necessary. Such certification could include Emergency Medical Technician, Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician, or Wilderness First Responder
  • Valid driver's license required. Candidate must obtain School Bus endorsed license (LI to pay applicable fees)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, and lift up to 60 pounds. Able to perceive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound. Must be able to hike long distances and at times run for short distances over rough terrain. Work requires a minimum standard of visual acuity, with or without correction, that will enable him/her to complete administrative and clerical tasks and visually observe clients in outdoor activities. It is understood that activities take place in a wide variety of conditions, often inclement, and require the ability to function effectively in such an environment.
