Job Description

Our Brewery We're looking for a full-time Head Brewer to join our award-winning brewery in downtown San Rafael, CA. The brewery and taproom are a focal point in town and our goal is to provide the best beer and food we can, as well as a welcoming space for our community to enjoy. We love brewing a wide variety of beer styles and creative experiments while also producing high quality classics. It's a lean team so flexibility and hustle are required. We have a 15-bbl brewhouse, 8 fermenters, and a small but varied spirit and sour barrel program. Your Role As our Head Brewer, you will be responsible for everything from guiding production as a whole to fine-tuning all the little processes.
Responsibilities Production:
Perform all functions related to brewing and cellar-work, including (but not limited to), yeast management, malt milling, cleaning/sanitizing kegs, packaging beer, tank transfers, gravity readings, and clean-in-place (CIP) Ensure all daily tasks are completed and prepare for brew / cellar action items for the subsequent day. Clean, organize, clean, organize, clean Conduct sensory evaluation of beer quality and raise issues to management
Inventory Management:
Maintain accurate inventory counts Manage purchasing of ingredients and chemicals across a variety of suppliers
Safety:
Foster a culture of safety across the production team Identify unsafe conditions or processes and help improve safety
Equipment:
Maintain brewhouse and support equipment (i.e. air compressor, chillers, steam boiler, etc) with regularly scheduled maintenance including but not limited to changing oil, air filters, gaskets, etc. Assist with production equipment installation and upgrades. Assist with draft line maintenance and replacement, as needed.
Documentation:
Thoroughly document brew days, cellaring, barrel-aged beer tastings and additions, etc. Enter production, packaging, receiving, and inventory details, etc., into production and/or CRM software Maintain and document taproom beer inventory Help maintain / update existing SOPs and develop new SOPs.
Teamwork:
Communicate clearly with management and bar staff regarding production schedule, Responsible for training production team members on all production aspects Assist with hiring of production team members Participate in festivals and marketing events, public tours, education, tastings and interaction with brewery/taproom guests Additional miscellaneous tasks as needed
Qualifications:
2+ years of professional brewing experience Strong mechanical aptitude and experience maintaining HVAC, steam, and compressed air systems. Proven leadership skills with the ability to train and inspire a team. Formal brewing education or certification is preferred. Passionate about craft beer, sensory evaluation and quality assurance.
