About Jug Handle Creek Farm and Nature Center Jug Handle Creek Nature Center (JHNC) is a nonprofit retreat and nature education center located on 33 acres along the Mendocino Coast. We offer affordable lodging and camping for nature lovers, environmental education programs, and event spaces for retreats, school groups, and special gatherings. Booking revenue funds our mission of environmental stewardship, education, and community engagement. Among meadows and forests, we have the capacity for up to 140 guests. Our facilities include a large Victorian farmhouse with seven bedrooms; the adjacent Top of Hill Meeting Room and auxiliary spaces; three rustic cabins; two new cottages; a Bunkhouse with four guestrooms, a shared kitchen, and a large meeting room; eleven campsites with two adjacent bathroom buildings for up to 100 campers; a Native Plant Nursery and other miscellaneous outbuildings. The Guest Host position is a combination of onsite tasks and on-call hours both day and evening. The Guest Host (GH), who reports to the Guest Services Coordinator (GSC), communicates with guests, plays a critical role in ensuring that our guests have a positive experience, helps with onsite security/safety, performs housekeeping to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of all site facilities, and performs light maintenance. The ability to work as a team for the position is critical, due to the number of guests we may have onsite and the fast-paced turn-over of facilities. All work is to be performed as outlined in Jug Handle Creek Nature Center policies and protocols. Key Responsibilities Teamwork The ability to take initiative, work as a team, and communicate well with others is essential as the work is demanding and the turn-over of facilities is fast-paced. Like the housekeepers, the GH is responsible for the whole job, and supports each staff member to together achieve the highest standards. Willingness to take direction, follow it, and follow-up when requested. Recognize that work efforts are made by all and that tips are shared among the entire housekeeping team. This part-time role requires reliability, flexibility, and reliable transportation.
On-Call/Guest Host:
( Approximately 24-30 hours per week) Serves as the point person along with the Guest Services Coordinator (GSC) after bookings and during large events on the property, including sharing knowledge of facility guidelines with guests and ensuring their cleanup post-event. Must have a cell phone and stay in cell service coverage during on-call shift. Answer guest questions promptly both in person and via phone, and provide a positive guest experience. Guest services are provided from 9am to 8pm 7 days a week, with the work split between the GSC and the GH. Email non-urgent messages to the GSC, and text or call when necessary. Many issues can be resolved on the phone when on-call off-site, but there are situations when the GH must drive to the site within 20 minutes to resolve issues promptly and effectively. A desire to help others and problem-solve is paramount to providing a positive guest experience. Issues can range from simple questions to a guest being locked out from their room or a minor maintenance issue, like a leaky faucet to safety issues, such as a power outage, a fallen tree during a heavy storm. On occasion, there is an upset guest, such as someone is occupying their campsite or the music next to them is too loud, so the GH would meet with the guests involved and resolve the problem based on current reservation data and JHNC policies. The GH will work closely with the GSC and, at times, the Executive Director (ED) to ensure guest satisfaction. This job is most active during the summer with accommodations filled to capacity, and the GH must be willing to work evenings and weekends, including holidays, and work may be onsite or on-call as their schedule outlines. In an emergency, follow JHNC policies and provide quick solutions to ensure guests' comfort and safety are met. This part-time role requires reliability, flexibility, and a reliable means of transportation. Supplemental Housekeeping /
Light Maintenance:
Occasional housekeeping and light maintenance may be required and should be considered part of this role. If Supplemental Housekeeping/Light Maintenance duties are necessary, they will typically be scheduled during your on-call shift, however additional hours may be required to perform these tasks. Team with Guest Service Coordinator (GSC) and other Housekeepers (HK) to ensure that the farmhouse, cabins, cottages, bunkhouse, meeting spaces, support facilities and campground are prepared for guests and groups prior to guest check-in. Perform Housekeeping activities per JHNC protocols, including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, washing, laundry, making beds, trash removal and other normal housekeeping duties for all rooms, bathrooms, kitchens and the like for all JHNC facilities. At campsites, perform trash and compost removal, including picking up campgrounds, clean campsite bathrooms, and ready for guests and groups. On occasion and at Guest Services Coordinator's direction, may be required to stock wood for cabins and Farmhouse to ready for guests when they arrive. Light gardening such as weeding, yardwork, watering may occasionally be required. Acknowledgement that work tasks vary for regular cleaning and periodically scheduled deep cleaning per JHNC protocols, and the schedule for each will be at the sole discretion of the GSC. Report missing or damaged items or exceedingly unclean facilities to GSC immediately, as additional charges to the guest may be warranted. On Call Expectations & Emergency Response The GSC and GH split the responsibility for being on call for guest issues during business hours from 9am to 8pm, 7 days a week, with occasional, urgent calls later into the evening, including answering calls, troubleshooting issues remotely, and responding to urgent onsite situations. Emergencies outside these hours should be addressed only when critical, such as major facility damage, safety concerns, or urgent guest incidents like a lost key or an injury. Notify Guest Services Coordinator (GSC) if unable to work scheduled shift or perform work duties. GH to remain within cell service range and be reachable for urgent matters during all scheduled on call hours. Notify FSC if there are maintenance or life/safety issues that need to be corrected or addressed (e.g., smoke alarms, security lighting, fire extinguishers inspections, wood stove and repairs.) Be a responsible team member to ensure that JHNC is a safe place for visitors' day and night. Be alert to unauthorized use of the facilities and contact the Executive Director and local law enforcement authorities as needed to maintain security. In an emergency, follow JHNC policies and provide quick solutions to ensure guests comfort and safety is met. Participate in all trainings and meetings, and demonstrate an ability to work with Facilities/Safety Coordinator (FSC) and the Executive Director (ED) to understand and follow JHNC Safety Policies, including, but not limited to: Illness and Injury Prevention Program. Procedures and policies outlined in the Emergency Action Plan , including working with staff and guests in an emergency situation (medical, fire, severe weather, power outage, etc.) Procedures and policies outlined in the Hazard Communications Plan regarding hazardous materials. Workplace Violence Prevention Plan. Become certified in First Aid, CPR, Narcan training and others as outlined in JHNC policies. Be the designated First Aid responder as scheduled. Respond promptly to texts, Airbnb messages, Hipcamp messages, and emails during on-call shift. Administrative Attend Staff Meetings and trainings as scheduled by the ED. Report to Guest Services Coordinator(GSC) and meet regularly (at least twice a month) to recommend and implement operations improvements and take direction regarding work tasks and schedule. Document work tasks and hours to complete and provide to GSC each pay period with timesheets including taking required breaks and clocking in and out for each lunch period. Accept and follow all JHNC Policies as outlined in the JHNC Handbook/Safety Policies, including ongoing updates as notified. Check and respond to administrative emails during on-call shifts. Qualifications & Skills Required Must reside within 20 minutes of Jug Handle Creek Farm and Nature Center. High School Diploma and 5+ years' experience performing guest services, housekeeping, and hospitality. Health and safety awareness and knowledge. A good service ethos and a can-do, proactive, energetic attitude towards your work and people. Strong communications and problem-solving skills, who can resolve issues of all kinds for guests to their satisfaction. Courtesy and professionalism with guests and staff. Attention to detail with the ability to prioritize. Honesty and integrity. Must possess a valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, good driving record, current vehicle registration, and up-to-date vehicle insurance. Must possess a cell phone for calls, email, and text messages, and be willing to install Apps as required to work at JHNC. Preferred Knowledge of basic maintenance and repair tasks. Familiarity with Mendocino Coast tourism and outdoor recreation opportunities. Bilingual and ability to read and write in English/Spanish is a plus. Physical Demands & Working Environment The physical demands to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Be willing to work both inside and outside in varying weather conditions and situations. Ability to lift and carry 40 lbs., climb stairs and hills on the property, and walk on uneven terrain.
Compensation & Benefits Pay:
$24/hour for active Housekeeper and responding to a call. $20/hour for on-call hours even if there are no on-call responses.
Hours :
Part-time (approx. 24 to 30 hours per week for active work and on-call hours combined), including some overtime, weekends, and holidays. Flexibility required for seasonal fluctuations, guest needs and event bookings.
