Job Description

Rocking V Cafe is looking for an ideal candidate for hosting bussing on our busy weekends and some weekdays. Night schedules typically begin at 4p.m. or 3:30p.m. to after closing, once all duties have been completed. About Us Rocking V Cafe is a small restaurant and popular dining destination in Kanab, UT. We are fast-paced, and our goal is to provide excellent food and service to our guests, ranging from locals of southern Utah to national and international tourists in an art-filled mercantile building from 1892.

Food perks provided On-the-job training Lively atmosphere Incentives Position Description A Host at Rocking V Café works primarily at the front entrance, host stand, dining areas, and waiting areas of the restaurant. Hosts are responsible for greeting guests, organizing table seating, managing wait times, and helping ensure smooth communication between guests, servers, bussers, and management throughout service. Hosts play an important role in creating the first and last impression for guests dining at Rocking V Café. Hosts are expected to maintain a welcoming, organized, energetic, positive, and professional atmosphere while helping manage the flow of the restaurant during all service periods. Hosts are responsible for managing guest seating rotation fairly and efficiently while monitoring table availability, guest wait times, server sections, and overall dining room flow. Hosts must communicate effectively with bussers, servers, bartenders, kitchen staff, and management to ensure efficient operations and positive guest experiences. Hosts are also expected to communicate important operational and compliance information to guests when seating tables. This includes informing guests of waitlist times and expectations, informing guests to have identification ready for alcohol service verification, informing guests of applicable liquor laws for indoor or outdoor dining, providing information regarding restaurant policies involving pets and service animals for indoor and outdoor dining areas, and advising guests that water is available upon request in accordance with restaurant procedures. While hosts spend significant time interacting with guests, professionalism, positive body language, urgency, patience, and strong communication skills are expected at all times. Hosts may occasionally assist with answering phones, handling guest concerns, assisting with carryout orders, cleaning duties, and supporting overall restaurant operations as needed. Duties and Responsibilities Greet guests promptly with a welcoming and professional attitude Manage waitlists and provide accurate wait time estimates when possible Communicate accurate information to guests and management regarding wait times, table availability, and operational concerns Seat guests efficiently while balancing server sections and table rotation Provide information regarding liquor laws when applicable Provide information regarding restaurant policies involving pets and service animals for indoor and outdoor dining areas Ensure guests are informed to have identification ready for alcohol verification when applicable Inform guests that water is available upon request Conduct merchandise, art, and collectibles transactions Proper handling of cash, credit card, gift card, and Point of Sale transactions Monitor table availability and communicate table status with bussers and servers Maintain organization and cleanliness of the host stand, entrance, and waiting areas Answer phones and assist with guest questions professionally Maintain professional phone etiquette and communication at all times Assist guests with carryout orders and restaurant information when needed Maintain awareness of restaurant seating capacity and pacing during busy periods Assist with cleaning menus, host stations, windows, entry areas, and waiting areas Help maintain organization and cleanliness throughout the restaurant when time allows Assist servers, bussers, bartenders, and management when operationally necessary Complete all opening, running side work, and closing side-work duties daily Maintain professionalism and composure during stressful or high-volume periods Perform additional duties as assigned by Management or Lead Servers Skills and Qualifications Hosts are expected to work with urgency while maintaining professionalism, teamwork, and a positive attitude throughout each shift. A successful Host at Rocking V Café should demonstrate the following skills and qualities: Strong customer service and guest interaction skills Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills Positive body language, professionalism, and guest awareness Ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced environment Strong organizational and time-management skills Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure Strong teamwork and communication with all restaurant staff High energy, urgency, and strong work ethic Dependability, punctuality, and willingness to assist where needed Ability to solve problems and handle guest concerns professionally Ability to professionally handle guest complaints, frustrations, and waitlist concerns during busy service periods Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time Ability to safely carry trays, dishes, beverages, bus tubs, and restaurant supplies efficiently throughout service Ability to lift and carry restaurant items, supplies, garbage, and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds Ability to bend, twist, reach, and work quickly in confined or crowded spaces Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume restaurant environment Ability to work with urgency while maintaining safety, organization, and professionalism throughout each shift Compensation Expectations Hosts at Rocking V Café earn an hourly wage plus tips when applicable. Actual earnings may vary depending on weekly scheduling, guest traffic, carry-out order tips, teamwork, reliability, professionalism, and overall contribution to restaurant operations and guest experience. Education and Training Requirements The Host position at Rocking V Café is considered an entry-level position. Prior restaurant experience, formal education, a high school diploma, or GED are not required. Rocking V Café encourages employees to pursue higher education, trade programs, and personal growth opportunities while employed with the company. Employees who are minors may have restricted schedules or hours in accordance with Utah labor laws. Rocking V Café provides on-the-job training under the guidance of management, leads, and experienced staff members.
Training includes:
Guest greeting and seating procedures Waitlist management and table rotation procedures Restaurant communication standards Customer service expectations Handling of merchandise, art, and collectibles Point of Sale order entry Cleaning and sanitation procedures Restaurant workflow and operational procedures Basic food safety and alcohol compliance awareness Food Handler Permit Requirement All restaurant positions, including hosts, are required to maintain a valid Food Handler Permit in accordance with Utah health regulations. All employees are expected to obtain their Food Handler Permit within 30 days of hire.
