Job Description

Summary:
This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for guests, staff, volunteers, and visitors at the Alaska SeaLife Center. The Seasonal Custodian provides custodial coverage for scheduled days off, vacations, and other absences within the full-time custodial team. This temporary, seasonal position will ensure the facility consistently maintains adequate custodial staffing levels to meet visitor traffic demands and operational cleanliness standards. The position performs routine cleaning, sanitation, waste removal, and facility upkeep throughout public and staff areas of the Center.
Education/Training Requirements:
High School diploma or GED preferred. Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facility maintenance experience preferred. Experience working in museums, aquariums, zoos, schools, or other public facilities preferred. Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, equipment, and safe chemical handling practices.
Essential Duties:
Facility Cleaning and Maintenance Provides custodial coverage to maintain operational staffing levels during scheduled and unscheduled absences of full-time custodial staff. Cleans and sanitizes public restrooms, exhibit galleries, classrooms, offices, break rooms, meeting spaces, and common areas. Sweeps, mops, vacuums, dusts, and maintains floors and surfaces throughout the facility. Empties trash and recycling containers and ensures proper disposal of waste materials. Replenishes restroom and custodial supplies as needed. Maintains cleanliness of high-touch surfaces and public spaces to support a positive visitor experience. Operational Support Responds promptly to spills, accidents, and custodial emergencies during public operating hours. Assists with custodial needs associated with special events, educational programs, and periods of increased visitor attendance. Identifies and reports maintenance issues, facility hazards, equipment malfunctions, and supply shortages to supervisors. Safely operates custodial equipment and utilizes cleaning chemicals in accordance with established procedures and regulations Customer Service and Teamwork Works cooperatively with Operations, Guest Services, Facilities, Animal Care, volunteers, and other staff to support daily operations. Maintains a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with visitors, volunteers, contractors, and fellow staff members. Contributes to a positive workplace environment through cooperation, dependability, and effective communication. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, goodwill, cooperation, and providing standards of service. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, contractors, and visitors. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and varying shifts as required.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The position routinely involves moving custodial equipment, handling cleaning supplies, and working in public, office, and operational environments. The ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds is required. Employees may be exposed to wet floors, cleaning chemicals, and varying environmental conditions while performing assigned duties.
