Facilities & Custodial Services Albertville, AL $15/hr Substitute / On-Demand Hours are not guaranteed and will vary based on district need; this is an on-call substitute position with shifts aligned to the school's standard schedule. Occasional evening and weekend availability may be required for special events. We usually respond within a day About this role Albertville City Schools is seeking dependable and hardworking Substitute Custodians to join our facilities team in Albertville, AL. In this role, you will play a vital part in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming environments across school district buildings and grounds — directly supporting the health and well-being of students, staff, and visitors every day. This is an on-call, substitute position, meaning your schedule will be based on the school's standard schedule and opportunities will vary based on district need. As a Substitute Custodian, you will be responsible for preparing and ensuring the cleanliness of school district buildings and grounds. Whether you're stepping in to cover a regular custodian's absence or supporting a special event, your work ensures that every student walks into a clean and safe learning environment. A Day in the Life A typical day as a Substitute Custodian at Albertville City Schools begins with checking in at your assigned school and receiving your work assignment for the day. You'll spend your shift moving through classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas — sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing surfaces, and emptying trash to keep the building in top condition. You'll also be responsible for maintaining assigned workspaces and equipment, assisting with building and grounds security by ensuring doors and gates are properly locked, and supporting seasonal grounds maintenance as needed. Throughout the day, you'll interact professionally with school staff and occasionally with students, always maintaining a friendly and approachable demeanor. On some occasions, your shift may extend into evenings or weekends to support special events, so flexibility is key. Success in this role looks like a clean, safe, and well-maintained facility that staff and students can be proud of — and a team that can count on you to show up ready to work. Responsibilities Perform all custodial activities deemed appropriate by school administration, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing facilities Keep buildings and grounds neat, clean, and presentable at all times Clean and maintain all assigned workspaces and equipment to ensure proper functioning and hygiene Assist in building and grounds security by locking all doors and gates after use and at the end of each workday Assist in maintaining seasonal grounds work, including tasks such as landscaping upkeep and weather-related cleanup Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs of buildings, equipment, and grounds as needed Follow all safety procedures as provided by the district to ensure a safe environment for students and staff Perform custodial duties before and after special events, including on evenings and weekends as required Prepare and ensure the cleanliness of school district buildings and grounds Step in to cover a regular custodian's absence as needed Support special events with custodial setup, cleaning, and breakdown tasks Check in at the assigned school each shift and receive daily work assignments Move through classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas to sweep, mop, vacuum, sanitize surfaces, and empty trash Interact professionally with school staff and, at times, students while working on site Show up ready to work to help maintain a clean, safe, and well-maintained facility Requirements Required ! Completion of the Albertville Badge Orientation Video prior to beginning work ! Completion of Jason Flatt Act Training (suicide prevention awareness) ! Completion of Erin's Law Online Training (child sexual abuse prevention) ! Successful completion of an ALSDE Background Check ! Ability to work on an on-call, as-needed basis with schedule flexibility ! Availability for occasional evenings and weekends to support special events ! Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally ! Punctual, professional, and maintains a professional appearance at all times ! Friendly and approachable attitude, especially in a school environment with children present Preferred Prior experience in custodial, janitorial, or facilities maintenance work Familiarity with commercial cleaning products, equipment, and safety protocols Experience working in a K-12 school or similar educational environment Prior related experience working with or around children Positive, team-oriented attitude Commitment to high standards of professionalism, punctuality, and conduct in a school setting Takes pride in work and enjoys physical activity Ability to interact professionally with school staff and students; maintains a friendly, approachable demeanor Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on buildings, equipment, and grounds Ability to assist with seasonal grounds maintenance and basic landscaping tasks Ability to assist with building and grounds security, including ensuring doors and gates are locked after use Ability to follow all district safety procedures Ability to perform standard custodial tasks: sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing surfaces, and emptying trash Benefits of joining Spur Weekly Pay Get paid every Friday via direct deposit or Spur pay card.
