This position is responsible for preparing and ensuring the cleanliness of school district buildings and grounds. Substitute Custodians are called upon to fill in when regular custodial staff are unavailable, making reliability and a professional attitude essential to success in this role. A Day in the Life A typical day as a Russellville Substitute Custodian begins with a briefing on your assigned areas and any priority tasks for the shift. You'll move through classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and common areas — sweeping, mopping, sanitizing surfaces, and emptying trash to keep the building in top condition. Throughout the day, you may assist with minor maintenance tasks, help set up or break down spaces for school events, and ensure that outdoor grounds remain neat and free of debris. At the close of your shift, you'll assist in securing the building by locking doors and gates. No two days are exactly alike — assignments vary by school and need — so adaptability and a willingness to jump in wherever you're needed are key to making a great impression and being called back regularly. Responsibilities Perform all custodial activities deemed appropriate by school administration, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and sanitizing Keep buildings and grounds neat, clean, and presentable at all times Clean and maintain all assigned workspaces and equipment in proper working order Assist in building and grounds security by locking all doors and gates after use and at the end of the workday Assist in maintaining seasonal grounds work, including outdoor upkeep as conditions require Perform routine maintenance and repairs of buildings, equipment, and grounds as directed Perform custodial duties before and after special events, including on weekends and evenings as needed Follow all safety procedures as provided by the district and report any hazards or concerns promptly Requirements Required ! Must be 21 years of age or older ! Must be able to complete an ALSDE (Alabama State Department of Education) Background Check prior to or during onboarding ! Must complete Jason Flatt Act Training (suicide awareness) prior to or during onboarding ! Must complete Erin's Law Online Training (child sexual abuse awareness) prior to or during onboarding ! Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 100 lbs. occasionally !
