A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

  • Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes and seals floors; vacuums carpet, dusts, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork; empties and cleans waste receptacles, including trash barrels; cleans restrooms, locker rooms and showers; washes windows and walls; polishes metal work and cleans chalkboards.
Cleans window coverings, such as drapes and blinds. Picks up paper and other debris from school grounds, walks areas and the areas adjacent to the school facilities. Sweeps concrete surfaces adjacent to the buildings. Performs emergency clean-up service resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling and illness.
  • Moves and arranges furniture and equipment in preparing multi-purpose rooms or classrooms for special events or meetings.
  • Assists in receiving and distributing supplies and equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance tasks in keeping assigned areas safe and operational. May occasionally perform routine ground and building maintenance functions.
  • Performs other related duties as requested on a temporary basis.
Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodial work; tools and their uses and the ability to use them in minor maintenance work.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; make minor technical repairs; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • High School graduation or equivalent.
