Job Description

This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies within the Police Department. All appointments to this position are subject to the successful completion of an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Rialto Police Department. Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs routine custodial duties during assigned day or night shift to maintain buildings, office space, and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, and secure condition; operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment; perform other job-related duties as assigned and/or as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under supervision, the individuals in this class work independently or as part of a team to perform routine and repetitive custodial tasks and have at least one year of experience in general building and grounds maintenance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level management or supervisory staff. Essential Function Statements -- Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Perform routine custodial duties during an assigned shift to maintain buildings, office space, and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly, and secure condition. 2. Sweep, scrub, and mop floors; vacuum rugs and carpets; strip, wax, and refinish floors; shampoo and spot clean carpets. 3. Dust and polish furniture, light fixtures, and woodwork; empty and clean waste receptacles; clean and adjust shades or blinds. 4. Clean, scrub, and disinfect restrooms; wash windows and interior and exterior walls; polish metal work, clean sinks, mirrors, and other bathroom fixtures; restock paper supplies and soap as necessary. 5. Pick up paper, trash, and remove debris around grounds and in buildings; sweep and clean walkways and entrances. 6. Move and arrange furniture and equipment; set up facilities for special events and meetings. 7. Make minor, non-technical repairs as needed, such as replacing light bulbs and lighting tubes; plunging toilets and sinks, and changing fuses as related to custodial equipment; identify and report maintenance problems. 8. Wash windows, glass partitions and walls. 9. Operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment, including a floor stripper, buffer, vacuum cleaner, and small power and hand tools; replace bags on vacuum cleaners as necessary. 10. Ensure security of facilities during assigned hours; lock gates, doors, and windows; monitor facilities for vandalism and safety and fire hazards and report to appropriate personnel; raise and lower flags, lock and unlock gates and doors; set security systems as needed. 11. Perform emergency cleanup services resulting from breakage, vandalism, spills, illness, and injury. 12. Assist with coordinating service repairs with outside providers and vendors; assist in receiving and distributing supplies and equipment. 13. Perform other job-related duties as assigned and/or as required.

Work rotating and nontraditional shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended or irregular hours based on operational requirements. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Experience:

The equivalent of six months of full-time, paid experience in custodial work, preferably in commercial, industrial, governmental, or similar organizations.

Education:

Verification of a High School diploma, a GED certificate, or a higher degree.

•Insurability by the City's liability insurance carrier may be required Background Check Process All appointments to this position are subject to the successful completion of an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Rialto Police Department as well as a physical examination including a drug screening. The background investigation is a rigorous process. A typical background investigation includes but is not limited to: background interviews with individuals designated by the Rialto Police Department (this may include current and former co-workers, friends, relatives, neighbors, or any other relevant individual), criminal background check, credit check, polygraph examination, and psychological evaluation. Candidates may be disqualified from further consideration during the background investigation for a variety of reasons including if they have: an excessive number of traffic citations and/or collisions; arrests and/or convictions; a history of illegal substance abuse; poor credit history (factors include bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens and repossessions); or thefts from a previous employer. The following list describes some areas that are covered in the background investigation: Your relatives, references, and acquaintances are asked to comment on your suitability for this position. The information supplied regarding your educational history is examined and verified. You must list a history of your residences. Your work history and experience are examined with regard to your dependability, relationships with fellow workers, trustworthiness, and general job performance. Military service records are subject to verification. The background investigation considers your management of personal finances (however, being in debt does not automatically disqualify you). Your criminal, driving, and insurance records are evaluated.

Selection Process:

Candidates must clearly demonstrate through their application material that they meet the employment standards outlined above. All properly completed applications will be reviewed, and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Examinations for the positions may consist of any combination of written, performance, and oral exams to evaluate the applicant's skills, training, and experience for the position. Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list. The City may also merge lists.
