A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.
Job Summary Responsible for timely and efficient custodial operations, green cleaning methods, indoor air quality practices, safety and security protocols, and the ability to learn and independently operate various electrical, plumbing, heating and lighting systems within the building.
Supervision:
The custodian works under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager. Responsibilities Cleaning Replenishing paper products as needed. Disposing waste and recycling in the proper receptacles. Informing head custodian of concerns related to diminished supply inventory. Maintenance as requested. Operating equipment in a responsible and safe manner. Replacing lights, clock batteries, etc. when necessary. Painting designated areas as instructed. Making minor building repairs as directed. Assuming responsibility for closing the building each day, including determining that all doors and windows are secured and all lights are turned off. Grounds Maintenance Removing snow and sand walks as directed. Maintaining grounds as directed by facilities manager. Assisting with deliveries and receiving. Other duties as directed by the Facilities Manager. Working positively and cooperatively with team members and other school staff. Skills Proven experience in custodial or janitorial roles with knowledge of commercial cleaning procedures. Strong understanding of cleaning techniques, sanitation standards, and the use of cleaning equipment including floor buffers. Ability to handle chemical agents safely by following proper chemical handling safety procedures. Physical stamina for heavy lifting, manual handling, and prolonged periods of standing or walking. Excellent customer service skills to interact professionally with staff and visitors when necessary. Familiarity with facilities maintenance tasks such as basic repairs or painting is a plus. Commitment to safety protocol adherence and maintaining a clean, organized workspace at all times.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent. Understanding technical aspects of plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems Working knowledge of machines and equipment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the physical ability to execute the full performance of duties for the position, including but not limited to: reaching, lifting up to 40 lbs, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.
