A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.
Cleans and sanitizes assigned areas, including such duties as mopping, dusting, and trash removal. May complete duties related to window washing, meeting set up, pool cleaning, groundskeeping, proper maintenance of equipment, building repairs, and other related responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ensures the Y is attractive and clean by completing all duties listed on the daily schedule and maintaining upkeep of assigned areas and equipment. May perform sweeping, wet and dust mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, pool cleaning, painting, seasonal lawn care activities, and general cleaning. Steam cleans or shampoos carpets as needed. Picks up trash. Gathers, empties, and disposes of trash properly. Operates related motorized and non-motorized equipment. Records and reports all needed repairs; repairs as directed. Ensures YMCA building and property are secure during shifts and reports incidents and hazardous conditions to the supervisor. Informs the Branch Director of facility problems such as leaks, power outages, electrical problems, possible hazards, and similar issues. Mixes water, detergents, or chemicals in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications. Follows all safety procedures for chemicals, cleaners, and power equipment. Replaces soap, paper towels, and other supplies. Informs the Branch Director of supply inventory levels and when inventory needs to be replenished. Moves heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies manually or by using hand trucks. Strips, seals, finishes, and polishes floors as needed. Helps monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors after use and checking electrical equipment to ensure hazards are not created. Sets up for events and assists with clean-up. Assists in keeping program areas clean, ensuring there is no food or drink left in program areas, and cleaning tables, chairs, and related items. Attends all training sessions and staff meetings. Completes all other tasks as assigned. Abides by all YMCA Policies, Procedures, Guidelines and Standards, Core Values, and Code of Conduct.

QUALIFICATIONS
Six months or more of related experience preferred. Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents. Ability to report and record maintenance requests. Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment. Basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment. Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals and their safe, efficient use. Ability to follow instructions well and work well with others. Must attend all maintenance training and certification programs when offered and made available. Must be CPR/AED and First Aid certified within 60 days of hire.
