A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.
Under general supervision of the Lead/Chief Evidence Custodian, the Evidence Custodian is accountable for preserving the chain-of-custody and security of hazardous/non- hazardous evidence and nonevidential property received from law enforcement personnel. Receives, logs, packages, stores, inventories, issues and assists in the release or disposal of adjudicated materials. Releases, documents and issues evidence for the purpose of performing laboratory tests or providing testimony in court. Performs other duties as assigned. Pay Grade

Non-exempt Major Duties:
Monitors the chain of custody of property received into the Evidence Room to maintain integrity of the evidence; Completes and accepts intake of property from Sheriff's Office personnel and logs, tags and secures it in the Evidence Room; Stores property gathered according to type of material, temperature and handling regulations, requirements and standard operating procedures within the Evidence Room; Maintains accurate files and records of property handled by the Evidence Room, including computer data entry and hardcopy files; Completes documentation and proper records of persons having physical contact with any property in the Evidence Room; Releases and disposes of property following established Federal, State and Sheriff's Office laws, regulations, policies and procedures; Abides by Georgia Criminal Statues, court orders and Sheriff's Office guidelines pertaining to weapons receipt, handling, storage and release from custody; Resolves routine problems encountered in performance of work assignments; Conducts periodic audits and inspections of the Evidence Room to ensure full accountability for all property and evidence; Testifies in court when required; Instructs Sheriff's Office personnel on procedures of eventual property control; May be required to locate owners of property for disposal; Transports evidence to and from the GBI crime lab; May be called to crime scenes to secure evidence and assist the Crime Scene Specialist with evidence collection, processing, and preservation; Attends meetings, training classes, and conferences, and studies updated applicable reference materials in order to remain current on job-specific issues; Runs/processes background checks; enters and/or removes items/property and missing persons in

Supervisory Controls:
The Chief Evidence Custodian is responsible for the supervision of the evidence custodian. Work is assigned and completed in terms of specific tasks and duties. Work is evaluated on accuracy, quality, and timeliness.
Guidelines:
Guidelines include federal and state law and count ordinances, Sheriff's Office policies, and court procedures governing law enforcement action, NCIC and GCIC Council Rules. These guidelines require sound judgment and interpretation in application.
Complexity:
This position consists of performing varied duties of moderate to difficult complexity including physical observations, processing reports, clerical and customer relations with interpersonal communication often in adverse situations.
Scope and Effect:

Physical Demands:
This position may require the ability to operate and maintain an assigned vehicle and equipment for call out situations. The work is typically performed requires a clear speaking voice, the ability to receive, understand and act upon oral instructions and a thorough knowledge of the use of a radio. Requirements also include the ability to lift heavy objects and equipment, the ability to walk, stand, stoop, crawl, kneel, climb and push/pull objects visually identify or describe persons, vehicles, locations or describe physical evidence and crime scenes by sketching, report writing and providing courtroom testimony.
Work Environment:
The work is typically performed in an office environment, at a scene of an incident or in an assigned area.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent; Current and valid Georgia driver's license; Intermediate to advanced-level computer skills;
GCIC/NCIC
entry-level Operator Certification or ability to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the minimum qualifications, a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, criminology, sociology or a related field is preferred.
